How can i get rid of slack on my harddrive?

IIRC it's the space between files that is useless space. You can get rid of it with a disk defragger, but I only know for sure that Norton's defragger gets rid of it, don't know about the standard Windows one.
cool, i got the norton defragger. i'll run that tonight
Why not use the defragger built into Windows?
BTW, tell me how long it takes to defrag that drive, being that we both have the D740X (awesome drive! :D)
the defragger in windows blows. it is just a scaled down version of the norton speed disk anyway, it's not even microsoft.
the drive took forever to defrag, over an hour. but it really needed it.
umm..slack? Defragging doesn't get rid of that. It's wasted space taken up because a file doesn't completely fill its last cluster. You can reduce the amount of wasted space, but you can't get rid of it. To reduce it, you have to repartition your hard drive (make smaller partitions) and/or change the format of the partition.
Why did you want to get rid of it when you didn't know what it was?
Because as with a huge number of members of this online community, the principle of "a little information is dangerous" applies.Quote:

They know just enough to pretend they know what they're talking about, but in actual fact haven't a ****ing clue.
So I would say that most of the people who think they know everything there is to know about computers, would fail the original A+ exam miserably.
Meanwhile you were born with a silver spoon stuck where the sun doesn’t shine and knowing it all obviously. :rolleyes:Quote:

Yeah that must be it
Ummmm...Ok. I was in a program, norton i think, and it said that i had a certain amount of space lost due to slack. I don't have to pass the "A+" computer exam to know that wasted space is a bad thing, so i wanted to get rid of it.
I'm soooooooo sorry mr. perfect, but if you had a problem with it, then why did you even post here in the first place.
Are you talking to me or Plenderj?
plenderj. at least you wern't an ******* about it.
Ok, Plend went a little over the top - but let's not be as abusive as he was, ok?
