That's basically what my thoughts were too when I installed Linux.

you could also ask yourself the same thing about windows, what i first did when i installed linux is explore, recompile my kernal, play with desktop environments, see what programs were still on the CD-ROM
I know this is pretty much expected, but this runs alot slower than Windows did on the computer. The installation itself took forever.
what desktop are you using?
Gnome ran a bit sluggish...KDE was not slow though...Quote:

But it still bored me quickly :o was actually less stable than Windows in my experience
Someone said you can play Half-Life on it.... :D
If you've got a slow computer you'll thank yourself, because Linux seems to be able to push out all the FPS it can.
Also you can watch TV on it if you have a TV card.
That's what you get for using Mandrake. It gives the most Windows-like experience of all the distributions--crashes included ;)Quote:

Windows hasn't crashed on me in I-don't-know-how-long...only a few random apps, suprisingly most of them non-Microsoft. Dreamweaver and AOL Instant Messenger are the two biggies.Quote:

Hmm...
Same here, and I use 98
So if you dont crash much, and I haven't crashed in a while, what makes you say it crashes like Windows?Quote:

Just a joke, chill out ;) When I used mandrake it crashed more than windows did (especially KDE), but now I use Slackware (with Blackbox) and all is good :)

Yeah its fun to joke around...much like we still make jokes about Cyrix CPUs running hot when these days they run cool ;)
I dunno, I partitioned my drive beforehand in windows.
i mainly use linux for experimentation. i plan to do some programming for it
Same here, KDE was a royal piece of crap and crashed ALL the time, Windows Me was more stable :rolleyes:Quote:

Hobo: Konqueror is good for making sure your pages look good in all browsers and Linux is okay for servers, but not much else for the average user.
i know, it is waaay far away from mainstream use.
how could the avarage user possible figure out how to compile programs?
Are you sure you had it set up right? KDE never crashes for me, although i havn't tried 3.0 yetQuote:

Increase the swap partition size to 2 GB and see the difference.Quote:

I have turned on that computer since I installed it. What a waste of $25.
I just don't have time to sit around and wait for it to finish processing. Windows was 10x faster, by any measure.
i guess it is personal opinion i think that mandrake was the best $25 i ever spent
Man, 98 crashed constantly on me, and the only thing that's crashed for me in Win2k has been due to my POS vid card and it's lack of good drivers...
