Could be more like a hard drive or the controller failure. Try Reseating the IDE card (or whatever it is).
Sounds like the IDE controller to me...
i dont think she knows how to..just pull out the ide cable and switch them around or something?
The fans and drive moters cause just enough vibration to loosen cards,, data cable connections, and/or power connections.
Open the case and make sure there are no slightly loose connections.
You ain't getting any "Can't find C drive" or "Can't find boot sector" error messages are you....
Just thinking the battery thing, if reseating the card don't work...
run scandisk. That should clear up whether or not you have a dodgy HDD

she got one last week, and one over chrismas break. its a compac presario, about 2 years old.
i took the IDE cables out and switched them around, maybe it was a cable problem, seems alright as of now
running scandisk...theres an idea :)
i had a problem like that, after working on it for like an hour i said screw it and watched TV for 15 minutes, i cam back and tryed it and it worked fine, although it detected my hard drive as an auxillary boot device, and today i have to manually reset my bios (short 2 terminals on the motherboard) and it is now detecting it as a network drive, go figure but it works fine, i can't figure out why though :p
