My FINAL LINUX question!

Ok, How can I kill Mandrake? I liked the KDE interface, but it just isn't for me. I'll stick by Microsoft til the end! :) I just wanted to try Linux and see what it was like. Really slow! Nice design and all, but according to the Mandrake website, their trying to somewhat compete with MS and that's just not gonna happen right now. Not enough support. :) Anyway, Mandrake is on a different HD then my Win XP, so the drive Mandrake is on I can just format and use Fdisk. Only thing I'm worried about is the LILO bootloader. How can I get rid of it so it won't come on when my system starts up. I just want to go back to booting XP by default w/ no bootloader. Any help appreciated.

well first of all you should of used a proper distro of Linux that isn't crap such as SuSe, RedHat, Slackware, but if you want the boot loader back to normal then re-install xp over the top and don't make any changes and it will re-write the MBR for you

Hey Mandrake isn't crap, you just don't like it for some weird reason ;)

About the slowness: it can be slow when it first starts just like Win2k is, but after a while I don't find it slow.

Not that it matters, if you don't like it then don't bother using it.

I share your thoughts hipopony...I don't think they are ready to compete with Windows yet for the consumer market...servers, sure, although I doubt many businesses would use Mandrake for servers (correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like a more consumer-oriented release of Linux)

Anyway...to remove the bootloader...do fdisk /mbr at a DOS prompt..:)

eventually i think that linux will eclips windows, not yet though, mandrake is eventually working towards that by makeing it user friendly. mandrake is the windows ME of linux (well except the extreme crappyness) it is marketed towards the home user, redhat on the other hand is the NT of linux it is marketed towards the bussiness user, (and yes i know mandrake is based on redhat).

Use the install CD to remove all the linux partitions and resize the windows one (if you want). It should work.

I don't think the windows installer will recognise an ext2 partition, might jsut skip over it

Mandrake is pretty nice, in my opinion. Ive found it quite enjoyable to work with, now that I have everything set up the way I want it (it even lets my moniter go higher then 1024x768 without a scrolling desktop thing). Still poking around with it, but everything seems very well laid out. I imagine that if it were my first OS, I would be very comfortable with it.

The only thing I found disconcerting is the fact that the KDevelop text cursor looks exactly like the I bar mouse cursor (the one you get over a text box).

Mandrake + KDE is the friendliest penguin.
If you can't work out with such a setup, you propably won't with any other distro.

If it is really slow...you had to feed it lots of swap space. Something like 2 GB will be ideal.

I prefer GNOME, but only because KDE was giving me wierd mouse errors (like I couldnt click on things), while GNOME was nice, and didnt give me those errors =). It also sounds cooler!

I meant the Mandrake install CD. I guess I should have specified though.

whats the point of that? you would have to install mandrake again, just use partition magic, it will take care of those partitions in a very short time

No, you can start the install and get to the partition part and partition your disk how you like. Then format the partitions and just reboot. Nothing will be installed.
