having seen some other posts on the Package and Deployment wizard, I understand most people think it sucks, me being no exception. Since I am stuck with it, though, does anyone know how to use it (or something else) to remove previously installed components? my program installs fine when there is no previous version on the computer, but if there is a previous version, I have to remove it manually or the program will not install right.
thanks,
Andrew

I do not use the P&D wizard, however what fails when you reinstall the app ? Is it crashing or just not installing the files ?

what happens is that if I install the program without removing the previous version, everything appears fine in windows explorer, but if I open Add/Delete Programs in the control panel, the program is listed twice. Once it is listed by just the program name and once by the program name followed by the installation route. Then if the user clicks on the desktop or start bar icon, the old version opens, and whatever changes I made in the new version do not show up. If I remove either the old version or the new version manually AFTER installing the new version, I get the error that Windows is looking for the program.exe when I click on the desktop or start bar icon.

Sounds like a royal pain in the a**. Fortunately I don't use the beast. I use the Wise installer, nice package, very powerful, not anywhere near as complicated as Installshield.
Unfortunately it's a bit pricey if your just buying it for yourself.

$$$$
How pricey is a bit pricey? It is a pain to have to remove the old program each time, and I can't be physically present for every installation to remind people to remove the old one first.

The prices vary depending on what version you buy. The versions are:
InstallMaker $174
InstallBuilder $358
InstallMaster $698
These prices are from the latest vbxtras catalog. http://www.vbxtras.com

If you want to replace a previous installation, increase the version number of your program (Project --> Properties --> Make tab). This should fix your problem.

I have just tested what I said, and I have to correct myselve. The shortcut (in startmenu or from desktop) starts the new program alright, but the program is still listed twice in control panel.

If your using a registered version of VB6 then check this out. It's free and better.

pain in the ass
VSI is cool, and worth it, but a major <snip> pain in the ass.
I can not get the <snip> program files folder to "show up"
if I look in c:\program files, I see the folder, but when i go to the start menu I cant see it....
if someone knows how to fix this, than PLEASe tell me.
and if anyone is offended by my cussing, tell me.....
