ARRRRRRGGGGG.
Yesterday evening I did a windows update from the microsoft site.
It downloaded about 5 megs of security updates.
Now when I try to boot, right after it gets out of the low-res image of windows 2000 pro (built on NT technology) with the scrolly thing across the bottom, and goes into the bluey-greeny background of windows it reboots.
If I'm running in safe mode I manage to see a blue screen error but its only there for a split second so I can't see what it is.
Any bright ideas ?

No idea - what other boot options (press F8 as soon as you restart) do you have - is there one where you can selectively load hardware drivers or log the boot process?
Stick the installation CD in and run a repair. That happened to me a while ago and the repair fixed it.
That'll be 'cos the repair overwrites all system dll's etc with the original ones - thus neatly rolling back all updates whilst leaving the updated exe's. Hmm 'recipe for future grief' anyone?
It worked for me. I just had a corrupt file, ran the repair and now everything works :D I have had no problems since.
I had the same problem when I installed XP. What does the blue screen say? I pressed Del during startup and entered bois. Then I went to Fail-Safe startup opposed to OptimiZed

Anyhoo um yeah I've gone through all options in "Press F8..." but to no avail.
The blue screen error, well I don't know what it says because it just flashes up onto the screen and then the system reboots.
I don't have the original cd as it was installed from a network server.
I do have cd-r copies of windows 2000 pro and windows pro 2000 upgrade, but when I go into setup it just complains about not being able to create a boot loader or some bollox like that.
Uhn.
Ill see if windows xp fixes it up for me
yes, windows XP fixes all :) And corparate edition gets around microsofts snooping :D :p ;)
You prolly don't need XP to do that.

i had my second ever (+one above) blue screen today... sadly it never turned back on :( mobo is dead :p
Well I found a windows 2000 pro media kit, and did repair installation and its working okay now :)
