That's a great idea. Then instead of having one chat room, we could have many chat rooms - each for each topic!

That's a great idea. Then instead of having one chat room, we could have many chat rooms - each for each topic!
A while ago I suggested that.
Nobody listens to me :(
Boohoo.
I thought I'd show off that I had had that idea.
BUT NOBODY LISTENS TO ME :(
I've just found the link (scroll down to my post):
http://forums.vb-world.net/showthrea...threadid=14445
:(
Maybe nobody saw it :(
Because you never post it as a topic on it's own. But chat room will be a good idea. Let the world know that programmers are fun people to chat with.
I don't think the world's ready for us.
Me neither...
But maybe all the non-programmers out here could get another view on us...
Go for it!
I'm not sure if we would have people on that chat, i'm not sure but at least i'm just online to fetch all the post and then write replies to them offline and go online again... You know I don't think I would have time for a chat
Time for a chat? It only takes a couple of minutes.
It'll be great for this site.
I'm not so sure about that. I'm always chatting by icq or aol instant messanger and it takes up to 30 min to get something done with it
That's because you're chatting with your friends. On here, you just chat about a little of this and that and it's over in a minute or two.
Maybe i woulf have time for it then, but im still not sure. oh, and this post suppose to bring me back on first place of us fanatic members
i'm sure we coulkd all spare a bit of time to chat.
yeah, youre right megatron after all, chatting at chitchat just takes more time than a ordinary chat would take
uh huh. Also we won't have to worry about "trash" posts. We could just have a chit chat fourm like an actual chatting room withmany different rooms ala threads in there.
Yeah, megatron, u agree, we would not need to chat by posting things.
I wouldn't really call it cheating because people like to chat a lot, but with a chat room, it will be more convient and faster as well.
Hmm, just wondering if John is going to make a chat here, or are we just going to post here in chitchat every day
Either one or the other. Both are fine with me
I vote for puting up a chat here
I thought he said that he couldn't do that.
why not? We just need him to understand that we can't have this chitchat around
Well first what we need a crowd of people. you me and Sam aren't enough. We need like 50 people so then it'll look like it's a desparate need for the site.
Hmm, If youlook what happened on this thread you will see why we need a chat forum, I'm sure a lot of people on this site would be willing to write some code to make this work, I reckon If we organised this properly we could actually get a group project to work and write a chat room specificly designed for this site. We'd need a few interface guidelines but it could run as a seperate unit on another part of the site.
I think if chit chat has grown this spectaculary at a week, then we have enough chatters to have the chat ongoing. But Sam, do you know how to program chats? I do not.
no I don't but there's something called direct play with dx7 or I'm sure we can get a basic chat engine, It can't be too hard. Ill look into DPlay.
Can't we just download a chat package?
:) YES!!! :) Hope you'll have it ready soon.
Will it have the ability to have different "rooms" for different topics?
we can only hope.
If not, we can always keep the chit chat fourm.
For everyone!!! If you guys want to CHAT, you can use chat on my Web site, until John develops one here on VB-World.
Chat at VBGarage
Note: you must be running Internet Explorer, because I'm using Microsoft Chat ActiveX control.
But I'm working on the Chat program that will be browser independent. See you there.

we are probably gonna need some java programmers to get a good chat program here...
we could use the OCX like serge, but IE crashed for me, and some people ACTUALLY USE netscape, i hate netscape....
I am in the process of learning java, i could program one if you could wait about two years for me to get good :p
just kidding,
making a chat, that can use our member names is gonna be really hard, because, most of these forum things are setup like this:
ok, now making that into a chat room would be pretty hard, it would have to read all the member files, as this board does, the only hope, would be to get a chat room from vbulletin(creator of this forum), but i spect this forum was mighty expensive, and james, or john wont want to spend more money on it.Code:public_html ' <-- main directory
public_html/ubb ' <-- this is the noncgi directory,
'for ultimate buliten board,
' http://www.ultimatebb.com), this is
'where all the images(icons), and control panels
'are located(usually, server.com/ubb/cp.html,
'the public_html is for the server use only)
now for the cgi-bin
public_html/cgi-bin ' this is where all of the posts
'and forum files(the forums are usully folders,
' public_html/cgi-bin/forum1, etc..) are stored.
public_html/cgi-bin/members ' this is where all the member files are stored,
'the member file looks like this
Admin5|4tugboat|[email protected]||AdminWrite|n/a|n/a|1|Administrator|n/a
first is username | then password | then email addy |
I dunno whats next | then acess, IE adminwrite,
memberwrite, or whatever | then someotherstuff
| otherstuff | # of posts | then label
(Admin., Mod., Member, Junior member, etc.)
and the name of the file is
Admin5.cgi
or
Admin5.pl
I am sure there is a way to maybe convert all the member files into a database, and read from that.
You don't have to learn JAVA just to make a CHAT room. You can use just plain ASP to that. My chat program will be ready in about a week (using just plain ASP).
Sorry to start this up again, but does anyone know about when this chat room will be up and running?
This topic is 2 months old. Anyhow, now we have the ability to click under someone's signature and chat with them on ICQ, AIM or Yahoo.
If you do not want to use those, Serge said he has on on his site. http://216.200.173.158/vbgarage
That link doesn't work
Also I think ICQ is the best messanger since you can send offline messages
Still work in progress :)
John
Just a temporary solution really, but, if you have mIRC, connect to london.uk.eu.undernet.org (port 6667), and type /join #vbworld
I'm not paying for that and there are no bots, so the room doesn't exist until someone enters and becomes ChannelOp, but it's marginally better than nothing.
Speaking of IRC, I believe IBM makes an IRC client in Java that works as an application or applet that should work cross broswer. I havn't had a chance to test it yet, but you should be able to find it here:
http://alphaworks.ibm.com/
I came across it while I was grabbing their XML Parser.
Don't worry guys, we have a chitchat section now. What was it you wanted to talk about. :D
