AcX dll running on client but not server - pls help!

I've got an AcX dll that is registered on our web server. Have then created an .asp page which references the objects from the dll - i.e. "AC.OpenDB(strConn, strUserID, strpassword) where AC is the object.

It works on the client side - i.e. in the <VBSCRIPT></SCRIPT> tags, but if I try to reference it in a server side script (<% ....%>) it will not work. The dll is on the server, and is registered using regsvr32.

I've tried putting in error checking (in the dll itself, for example, referencing last error #, etc.) - but we don't get any errors - just no data.

I'm at the end of my short rope here, as I've got no experience with this and am trying to muddle through by what I find on the net - and I am SO stuck......does anyone have any ideas?
