"The best thing since sliced bread"

Things are sometimes said to be "the best thing since sliced bread".

But....

what was the best thing BEFORE sliced bread?

The wheel is infinately more useful than sliced bread.

Not when you are gagging for a bacon sarnie, it ain't...

What I want to know is why isn't the saying updated, if something is better than sliced bread then why isn't it something like "The best thing since computers" or "The best thing since a vaccine for AIDS"

presumably we'd still have a normal loaf if we didn't have pre-slided bread. Therefore we could get an electric knife and slice it ourselves.

The wheel was responsible for getting the bread to the shop and to your house in the first place, therefore, wheel wins!

On a personal level, at the present moment, a wheel is **** all use to me as there is a bacon shop opposite, and a bread shop behind it.

Unsliced bread, although tastier than sliced, is not favoured in many bacon establiments, therefore sliced becomes the "staple carbohydrate" of choice. Thus, in this scenario, is INDISPENSIBLE.

but without the wheel, it would be impossible for the bacon shop to get the bacon, or to get the bread/ingredients for bread.

It stands to reason that it can't have been sliced bread (unless you really want to get stuck in a recursive loop!)

The wheel was invented long before sliced bread so seeing as no one ever says "the best thing since the wheel", sliced bread must have supassed the wheel.

So, perhaps the wheel was the best thing before sliced bread came along.

I'd have to disagree. As I said above, the phrase implies that sliced bread is still better than the current thing in question. If the thing was better than sliced bread, then they'd have to go for the next one up. So, something that's better than sliced bread but not as good as the wheel would be "the best thing since the wheel".

Does that make sense? Hope so.
