If im not mistaken, the mp3 compression technology is patented, by a company with a german sounding name that starts with F (dont remember the name =). If you do a search on yahoo, you should be able to find some info on it.

It's not really a company, it's a scientific institute. Now they try to make up their costs. :)
As far as I know it is free.
And Bee is right it is a science institute. They research nearly everything. I would love to work theire one day. They got a deparment in my City. I will try to find out more about it.
