What do you want to Do?
C++ is probably good, I'm just starting that at the moment but It's much harder than VB, I wouldn't try unless you're pretty good with the API and Subclassing, (you won't have any trouble learning it is you aren't but it's good to taker things slowly anyway, You can get a damned good undersanding of windows using VB and That's going to be an advantage learning C++.
Java is also quite a hot language at the moment, I don't know anything about it though.
Moving in the other direction something like Visual Interdev is Good for Internet development, and theres something calles Fox Pro which I think is a Database Langage.
If you're to Games and graphics go low level(C++ and Java) if you're into business solutions,(I think that's where the money is) Go high level, if in doubt do both.
It's not for me. Just wanted to know what people think.
You gotta choose c++ its the next best thing, and even better than VB. Java is a good choice too..if you do java might as well get into a full webdevelopment phase, cuzz sooner or later youll be working with xml js, etc... vc++ is tough, so try learning regular C++ then move onto the gui with VC++
I think and i really think that visual j++ is the next step. It's as easy and fast to creat forms like in vb. But it's so much more stable. And more flexible. And although the code is like java. You can creat exe applications and forms like in vb. It comes with visual studio 6.0 pro or you can buy it sepratley.
Of course after that you have to move on to c++ and so far i've read 5 books about it and i still don't understand. But the best book i recoment is "SAMS teach your self c++ in ten minutes."
Okay hope that helps.

It's nice to know someone else is having trouble with C++, I've been trying to lean it for ages and it's like running into a brick wall, Does anyone know a good way of learning for dubm people like me to learn it.
I have been using C++ but I'm not what you would call
"the master"
SYAlam suggested that you should try C++ before VC++. Well
I did a little bit of that at the beginning of my C++ stage.
Maybe about a week but don't spend too much time on it.
Well then again, everyone is different...
But some books i recommend are "Teach yourself Visual C++ in 21 days", "Teach yourself VC++ in 24h," and "Using VC++"
C++ used to be tough, but I mean once you get the hang of it youll turn out to become a C Geek. I knew every terminology and almost every code. I moved on to vc++ and moved on and expanded my skills towards windows. vC++ to me is harder than C++ due to the fact its too much windows oriented. VJ++ is great too, i havent used it, but i hear its wonderful. I dont know about the EXE's though. Try CBuilder by Borland. CBuilder is a C++ with a vb interface. Im using it, and creating fast and easy apps just like in VB. all you have to do is know C++ code..
if you want to do non-vis, use VB but just write everything with code, so VB is basically slower c++, ie. pointless :)
anyway...
learn DirectX; it's very easy and VERY good for all sorts of things. Even for apps, DirectMusic and DirectDraw can be useful.
