Look, MS underminds portablity. They can't release a product that is compliant to any given standard without releasing proprietary extensions. They have aggressively tried to destroy free competition. They have paid OEM vendors to uninstall free, but competitive software.
I've never been one to say MS is a monopoly, there is competition. But MS has been guilty of gross anti-competitive practices. MS has not contributed anything to computing. They have not innovated any technology, and their mindset of selling software like it is narcotics has done nothing but to string out the AOLized population and set back modern computing by 7 to 15 years.
Simply put, if there were never a Bill Gates, the world would've been a better place.

Well... you are always to express your resentment about some product by means that is not targeted at a particular person. Remember Bill doesn't go around making software for his company. He is the kind of guy my company will like to have as an executive. People confuse between the business style and the product quality. Everybody's perspective is different. I think windows 98 is pretty good and worth what I payed for. I use REDHAT Linux 7.1 and Mandrake Linux 8.1 { on two different machines}. I think except
for the consoles the GUI desktops KDE and GNOME are really crappy. They often crash. What do I do ? Find the CEO's of REDHAT and MANDRAKE and throw eggs at them ??? But I can ask for a refund.

Microsoft can't overcome ADOBE with a Microsoft phostoshop...because it a superb application that has no peers.
They did business on the same earth as microsoft is and are still dominant in desktop publishing Industry.

What the hell are you doing to Linux to make it crash twice a day? :confused: I've had KDE crash a few times, but it's never been much of a problem since I can use another computer on the network to SSH in and kill whatever process is locked up.

Uhh... Linux would be for whatever platforms were popular. There are Linux binaries available for all sorts of platforms, and you can always get the source and compile it yourself which means you can build your own binaries on any platform with an ANSI C compiler. I don't follow your logic.Quote:

Also, what do you mean, "Linux is now for the PC". As opposed to? Linux was orginally written for the x86 architecture. It is the GNU foray into PCs. And it was not written because Linus was disgruntled with MS. Linus simply wanted GNU on a CISC machine (for whatever reason). Linux was born on the PC, not migrated to it. Linux's predecessors, Unix, GNU, BSD, were born on RISC platforms, and some of them have made transitions to PC simply because the hardware is cheap.

Some proffesors at CERN made HTTP and HTML so they could easily share documents. The idea caught on and a few students at BYU made Mosaic, the worlds first, wide-spread, GUI web browser.
MS eventually made IE, and the world hummed along.
At this point, I'm rooting for Mosaic. It was first, and it is available on more platforms than IE.
These students graduate and start a company and create another web browser, and a web server. They give away the browser for free and sell the server. It is the idea that we can't sell lemonade if no one has cups, so give away the cups, sell the lemonade.
This company is Netscape, the browser is Navigator.
I'm still pulling for Netscape since they have more features, available for more platforms, and, in all honest, made the web what it is. Besides, why pay for IE?
Sun releases Java, which poineers their "Write Once, Run Anywhere" mindset. Netscape quickly changes the name of a scripting language they were writing, from LiveScript, to JavaScript. Their language embodies the idea from Sun. They want a scripting language that you can put on a web page and it will run on a browser, regardless of the platform.
They release their specs for JavaScript in the hopes that JavaScript will run regardless of the browser.
Again, I'm rooting for Netscape, since they innovated.
MS picks up JavaScript, but they obliquely diverge from Netscape's published standards. There are, in essence, two distinctly different JavaScripts. IE had already gained market share on Netscape if for no other reason but MS had stopped selling the browser and started bundling it with their OS.
Now that more and more pages are using the IE proprietary JavaScript, it makes Netscape look more and more like an inferior browser.
This isn't helped by several internal problems with Netscape, major bugs released, a whole release (version 5) scrapped, and their aquistion by AOL (/TimeWarner).
The W3C takes over setting the standard (Recommendations) for JavaScript, as well as the DOM. Their recommendations fall inline with MS proprietary extensions, giving MS the head start in being compliant.
Netscape releases a new browser, version 6. They drop the Navigator/Communicator name and simply call the product Netscape. And it is 100% compliant, with no extensions.
Wow... I had stopped using Navigator and Communicator. And now am getting into Opera and Konqueur, so I don't see the need to mess with Netscape, but... wow... no proprietary extensions.
MS releases their latest version of IE. They also maintian complaince. But, yes, Virginia... it has extensions. MS has even (attempted) to refuse to serve MSN to any non-IE 6 browser.
Well, I may not use Netscape, but damned if they still don't look like a much better company than MS will ever be.
They will eventually loose and die, which will again show that the best product/technology/company doesn't always win.
