Being a true blue kiwi my lifes quest is to find the best beer in the world :D
Currently I think that Stella artois tops the charts

If you want real beer (and not just some commercial, "pissy" lager), the best beer in the world would have on of these real ales:
- Abbot Ale (Green King Brewery)
- Cornish Knocker (Skinner's Brewery)
- Doom Bar (Sharpe's Brewery)
- IPA (St Austell or Green King brewery's)
I'm sure someone else (better qualified than I) can let you know what all the best lagers are. :)

I once went on a tour of the Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen and they have all sorts of beer there for you to 'sample'.
Wow, was I rough the next morning.
I remember challenging some Danish lads to a drinking contest ('cos I'm from Manchester and I'm well 'ard :rolleyes: ). Boy was that a mistake!
The Carlsberg Export that we have over here is the standard lager over there and is considered a bit of a fops drink 'cos it's only 5%.
*shudder* I hate it when people call Lager Beer :rolleyes:
Had some super PG Steam from the RCH Brewery (Zumerset) last night.
You can't beat a good pint of Directors.
Butcome Gold is another good local one.
Best Indie Lagers:
Anything from indie German Breweries. The lager is crisp, clear, almost sweet taste.
Special German Oktoberfest bottled lager (eg Bucher) - the nuts
An ice cold Heineken in Rotterdam

If I'm drinking with Arbiter, It's got to be lager though - so much easier to drink in large quantities. Kronenbourg 1664 tends to be priced nicely, so I'd go with that.

I only drink lager from bottles in teh UK - don't trust the pipes. Many pubs have lager that smells sulpurous, and has no head....
I like bodingtons, Caffery's etc. But the single best pint in the world has to be Belhaven Best.
But it doesn't half make you fart.

From my home (Sitting in my local listening to a Trad session just kicking off at around half one in the morning next to a peat-bog fire) :Creamy Guinness
From where I work (Sitting outside on LeidsePlein..After a good game of squash & watching lovelee Dutch Ladiz go to Aerobics by the dozen) : Draft Heineken in Litre Tankards (or draft Grolsch..)
From where I grew up (Sitting in a country pub on the edge of the Thames) :Brakspear's Ordinary (or Special) Real Ale, hand-pumped.
On the Town in the UK: Stella, KB1664 or Becks on Draft, or if yer lucky, a nice pint of London Pride.
As for UK Guinness, boys, that aint Guinness, that's pure sh....extra cold ornot !!!

OK, I've heard that Guiness in Ireland is different because the water is different but surely it can't be that different?

There is NO comparison !!! Even the cans of draft guinness you get in Ireland are much smoother & creamier !!!

I don't like Guiness anyway although I've never been to Ireland and had a "proper" one.
If I did go to Ireland, I'd probably be more interested in trying a Killkenny's or something like that.

Being a Belfast boy born and bred, I'm well aware of the standard of guinness outside of my homeland. I reckon most Guinness drinkers worth their salt know this too.
BUT, the evil that is Extra Cold Guinness is destroying the true flavour of guinness, and making the pubs in London that did pour a decent pint, concentrate on the extra cold as it sell more...
You can get half decent pints in England. You just got to find them, and know that they still don't touch the quality you get in Ireland...
As an independant witness who lived in Ireland and England for a while I have to say there is a huge difference between the two Guinnesses. The St. James's Gate Guiness is so much nicer.

Elitist is an adjective I would never have put in the same sentence as Irish before....they just don't fit together...
I dont think I give any answer on this because I live in America..and our beer sucks big time.. Thats why I am trying to learn to make my own..Three failed attempts so far...:(

The UK Guinness is just 'different' even when poured right, somehow it tastes more bitter, tinny even & the head is usually pretty rancid, even in the afamed irish-theme bars !! I used to drink the draft in cans when I was in the UK & often the odd pint in a good pub serving good guinness, the Extra Cold stuff is poor allright, but at home, some places serve warmer guinness than others and the warmer the guinness the worse the taste ? So sometimes it pays to go for extra cold if your'e in one of them pubs....
It never ceases to put a smile on my face, the way guinness 'can' be poured in the UK... right to the top - no -stoppin... thin, metally, yucky taste....
Gaffer, have you had the draft cans from Ireland ? They blow yer head off.....! Wots yer favourite London Guinness joint (under 3 quid a pint now please..)

As for Kilkenny, well, I know it's a matter of taste but Kilkenny doesn't really have a taste, it was dreamed up to be Ireland's answer to bitter :rolleyes: & failed miserably.....

Never had the draft cans from Ireland - usually drinking the stuff in glasses when I go home :p :D
Some pubs have certainly changed the way they pour the drink - I heard one of the reasons it was left to settle was because historically, there was a lot of sedement in Guinness, so needed to settle. How true this is is open to investigation. But the gaseous mix of the pump is an important factor - 3/4 itrogen, 1/4 Carbon Dioxide. I'm not sure they do that in the UK
As for decent Guiness in London (under 3 pound) -
O'Conor Don, Marylebone Lane, W1 serve a very goo pint in a non-theme irish bar (very like grand Dublin pubs). They also sell the fattest, freshest Oysters for 80p a pop...
The Toucan, Soho square - Lil sister of O'Conor Don.
The Market Porter, Borough Market, SE1 (my local) - do a fine selection of real ales too (not really my forte)
The Green Man, Poultry, EC4 (opposite whre i work) did an excellent pint whenthe barman from Bangor was there. Gone a little downhill now
The Captain Kidd, Wapping High Street, E1 - no Guiness here. but for £1.90 pound a pint, you get 3 types of german beer on tap, and CAMRA have something to do with it...

Not in terms of quality, but simply because they are different types of drinks (to suit different moods/weather etc).

Granted but I'd much rather drink them than a regular off the tap pint or, god forbid, piss like Heineken or Budweiser they dare to call beer.
I simply like the stronger type because they bring along another atmosphere. I drink them and enjoy them rather than standing at the bar emptying one after the other.
Where's the joy in that ?
Anyway, you should try them once in your life :D (Duvel has a percentage of a whopping 13%)

Or Chiney, Chimay, Orval, Rodenbach, Straffen Hendrik, Gulden Draak, Kasteelbier, Leffe ... the list goes on and on and on and on ... :D
Hoegaarden should be drunk without the lemon and ice, pure from the tap :p
And Palm has an aftertaste (and a great one at that). It's probably the best part of it :D
Anyway, there's a 2 day's festival here in Antwerp. Over 500 "special" beers exclusively found here in Belgium. Entrance is cheap and beers are free and plentiful (in any color, composition and shape). I know where I'll be spending my weekend :D :D
Actually I had a great drinking weekend in Antwerp a few years ago. The beer was lovely and obviously very pure as I didn't have much of a hangover despite being plastered the night before (and unable to find a kebab shop :D)

I went there with my Dad when I was 8. the OkToberFest isnt it/wasn't it ???? Whe in it ?? Tell me its the weekend after next...
There was a beer festival here (Amsterdam) last weekend but I missed it... They've got special autumn beer called BOK beer, it's quite nice..

There's quite a few few boozers in London sell Belgian beer on tap - Leffe was served by teh half in teh Pillars of Hercules on Greek st in soho at one time - lovely stuff. Had Duvel and Chimay before...
has its place, but drinking an ice cold gerrman beer in the sun is hard to beat. :D
