A suggestion - rather than look at tutorials, COM is a large subject, consider getting a good book. Tutorials are good as a quick overview, but, in the end, you can't really do much outside of the little example given on the page when you have finished reading the web page.

Go to a really large book store, like Barnes&Noble. These places have whole bookshelves devoted to C++. Pick a COM title and spend a couple of hours per day reading it in front of your computer, using the code provided. You'll spend about 60 hours, but you'll get far more than you would get reading 100 tutorials.

I like 'COM and COM+' - but it's about 1200 pages, and goes into EVERY little detail. Plus, you have to know C well to understand some of the examples. There are others, just as good. Some are aimed at VB programmers, which you seem to be better at than C.

If you are going to program Windows you have to know the api and COM, or else you can't do much. STL & MFC and ATL are there, and are meant as production programming shortcuts, but you can get by without them. A lot of posters here hate MFC, for example.

jim, yea, you're right..i was doing VB before, and then i stopped because i couldn't stand the fact that most of the stuff is already done for you, so i came to C++, which i am currently self-learning...
