because there is a lot of room at the back
and the music doesnt sound all that good if its really close to you
oh and one more thing
in the trunk, outsiders hear it better (after all, having really loud stereos) are usually for showing off :)
I am not an expert by far, but...
1. Subwoofers are big
2. Low frequencies carry very far, and you can't really tell the direction its coming from anyways.

Bass travels in all directions & can be tunneled, whereas mid & high need directing,
putting a sub in the boot(trunk) & creating a path (making tubes run from the boot to the main compartment of then car) gives just as good sound quality as putting the sub on the dashboard.
Certainly the boot/trunk is the best for free-air subs, and having a large capacity of enclosed air is always best.
I have a pair of 7x10s in the parcel shelf, some people get in and ask me where the sub is, but there ain't one, so good is the bass reproduction from the air in the boot.
I kinda lied.... this car is kind of like a hatchback... but not really, it has two doors, but it also has back seats... and the back seats can flip down and that exposes the "trunk" area....
It's a Ford Probe '90....
