If you are a REAL audiophile, you probably won't use MP3s. You'd use waves or CDA. When I got my new kickass Dell system with surround sound speakers (:p at Justin), I could actually hear the defects in a 128 kbps bitrate MP3.

I encode 192Kbps VBR. It owns, I have a 600W Pioneer 5.1 system connected to the computer via a Optical S/PDIF cable. (:p at all of you!) Can hear no defects at all. Even 128Kbps sounds good.
