Talking between two machines

Hi
What is the quickest and cheapest way to get two machines talking to each another in different parts of the world.
Some one suggested that I should try and connect the two machines directly using an internet connection (because of local call rate).
Is that possible?, I always thought inorder to do that I'll need to write a website first to allow both machines to communicate to each another.
Is it possible that I can get them communicating directly without such a website if so please can you point me in the right direction.

U can do this with the winsock control. See a complete tutorial about it here
