retrieving a disk's serial number?

I am using VB6 SP3

I try using the API GetVolumeInformation
which works fine at work Win98 machines, at home Win95 API call returns that it was successful I get the VolumeName, Etc but the
volume serial# is a negative number -why?

Is their a beter way to get the serial#?
