Can someone please tell me how to transform a colored image to a grey image (black & white) and then back to its original color. An example that I'm looking for should look similar to a command button when it is disabled.

    Thanks.

Look up RGB. You can change from color to B&W, but you loose information so you can't go back to the true colors (you choose the colors to go back to). Have you heard of "colorizing old movies"? They had to pick colors which look reasonable (but the information, i.e. the exact color was lost).
Let's say 8 bits per pixel for R,G, and B. (Red, Green, and Blue). That's how you get a 24 bit image. B&W could use 8 bits for "Blackness" or "Whiteness" depending on your point of view.
You might try averaging the 3 8-bit RGB values or weighting them to your preference to go from Color to B&W.
    Good Luck
