Windows Server 2008 R2
If we know that Windows Server 2008 is built from the same code base as Windows Vista and that it shares much of the same architecture and functionality can we say the same for the R2 that is built from the same code base as Windows 7?

I think they share the same kernel code base yes

Yes Chris. It is correct. Just a while ago i found that Server 2008 R2 is a separate kernel from Server 2008 and shares its code base with Windows 7 indeed. You can read more about it here.
