    Test Case Software

I am looking for software to keep track of testing that we do for our implementations. I need something that works outside of the IDE, as not all of our work is development. We do configuration of a third party software and setting up of web servers that run a third party product. I am not looking for anything that automates the testing, I am just looking for something that my development, testing, and PM staff can use to keep track of all of the testing that was done on a per project basis. Reporting would also be important, so we can show our customers all of the testing that was done.

I am open to SaaS or something we run local. It can be web based or run as a Win32 app. As long as the per seat costs are reasonable we would be willing to look at it.

What I am looking for form the VBF community is something that you have personally used and what you think of it. I want the good and the bad, so I can get an idea of what to avoid and what to check out. I have started doing the research on google and downloading some trials, so I would appreciate it if noone links me to a LMGTFY link .

    Thanks.

    Cool Re: Test Case Software

We use Quality Center (American spelling, made by Mercury but now bought out by, and sold/distributed by Hewlett Packard).

This is the top professional tool used usually by testing professionals, rather than developers specifically. It can have an add-in to allow automated testing, but the base product is purely for functional testing more.

It's a web-based application and comes with a built in, basically styled reporting system. A bunch of custom reports come with it, but then you have the ability to make and save your own custom reports gathering virtually any stats available.

I haven't got many bad points really (window sizing could be one),
but can imagine the pricing might be a little heavy so would say to check that out 1st (I haven't got involved in this side, so have no idea of the pricing or if it's "reasonable").

A second product I've used is JIRA before.

This suffers from the same issue as Lotus Notes, whereas it tries to be many products rolled into one. It isn't only a bug tracking system, but contains extra sections to tackle the whole management and tracking of a project's development. This leads to the testing side being a little less fully featured, but it's got a fair amount of options to use & should be good enough for most.

Good points are a basic, user friendly UI on the testing side, it should be much cheaper (again I haven't got involved in the pricing so can't advise on tihs side) and contains the essentials needed for most testing.

This is again web-based and I am unsure on the reporting side as I haven't used that side of this product before (having a quick scan of their website it appears some reporting and charting is built in within this product also though).

Thanks & hope these are of help,
    - Alex
