[RESOLVED] RentACoder
Hi all,
As an aside to this thread.
I'd like to soon try my hand at some hired programming in preparation for my possible venture into the world of professional programming. What is the general consensus on RentACoder.com?
I would definitely not attempt to bite off more than I can chew and get myself off on the wrong foot, but I've seem some .NET listings that seem simple enough that I could even handle. "Get some HTML from a site, display it in a TextBox for some reason and then parse it and extract whatever we need and write that to a file." I can even do that.
I guess I'm just looking for general experiences on RentACoder and what the pros think of somebody like me cutting their teeth on a site like this.
Thanks for any replies.

I think there is a general opinion that it is of no use to westerners as a source of income.
I you just want to get some projects for experience then it may be of use to you.
Many people actually wanting to make money out of it just cannot compete with the asian/indian people on there who can quote much less than us. The quotes for jobs just don't seem to match up to the work/time required.

Re: RentACoder
I'll second that - RentACoder is a synonymous for "Work-For-A-Penny" so it's just waste of time if you ask me.

Well, not a total waste of time.
It is real good for a laugh or two when you read the desired specs and then flip to what the requestor is willing to pay.
If that doesn't engender a big ole belly laugh, nothing will.

Thanks for the replies. I thought it looked a little weird when the poster described this big enterprise application and then offered $100.

I'm serious about what I said earlier. You should keep that site bookmarked and go check it out from time to time. It is inconceivable to me that any of those requests actually receive replies.
