Is there anyway to make a USB port act as a Serial (COM port) on your pc without a physical adapter?

I'm trying to read some information from a GPS device in VB 6, but my GPS device is connected through USB. A control kit I found to read GPS devices only allows reading on COM ports. So was looking to see if I could find a way to emulate a USB port as a com port or something like that instead of buying an adapter just for testing.
