well yes, note the name ends in .dat, this is just a FILE with a .dat added on the end. Open it in Wordpad and you can see its contents, if you think .dat is a video format of some kind, you are wrong. As many developers use .dat they are seen in all kinds of programs, for many different things. For example, a game i have Pocket Tanks saves its preferences into a .dat file, where they could of used Text, or INI. The reason being, .dat scrambles all its contents, sort of like encryption or HEX.

Maybe someone else can explain into more detail.

It appears that this video was downloaded off Kazaa

My suggestion is try renaming it .avi instead of .dat, as there is no way from what i can tell you can physically convert it into a true AVI type

"what's wrong if I downloaded that off kazaa ?"

    Its illegal

"what difference would it make if I rename it to avi ?"

Not sure, but seeming as its just a FILE named .dat, if you could get it to save as .avi and run it in Windows Media player, you have more chance of converting it

"Simply I'm asking how can I convert video files to avi ?[divx]"

have you searched google for this?

If you don't know the answer of a thread or even some hints , then it's better to keep your hands off it rather than useless argument .

    1) IT IS ILLEGAL, why do you think the IRAA are enforcing laws on this?

It's not .Even if it's, then I'm with more than 4,500,000 online users . Half of the earth population are downloading off kazaa and other p2p clients .
Thats like saying theres over 100,000 people robbing houses and shops right now, so i guess its ok for me

    2) Actually i do, i use TMPEG Movie Encoder to convert MPEG2 formats into MPEG format, to play as VCD's, i also use www.divx.com player to view DivX digitally encoded files.

    3) I am not arguing, i am trying to help you, im sorry if you think i have waisted your time, and im sorry for helping you.

1- My question was clear and I never mentioned kazaa you just came across accusing me of downloading this movie off kazaa . To be honest , no I didn't download it but half of my HD is full of kazaa stuff .

2-I finally used MPEG Encoder 5.0 , waiting for the results .

3-I don't think this was any kind of help .

The reason i mentioned Kazaa, was merely pointing out the fact that if you download content off there, dont expect it to be in 110% working quality and in the format you want

And what im getting at is that .dat is a FILE, with no true extension. Thus it might/will be harder to convert into AVI if it contains the incorrect information needed. You can probably view the .dat in Windows Media because it is an incomplete movie, converting it into a correct AVI file might be tricky.

Next time you will just have to wait longer then for help, i know its clearly not wanted

    Sorry i cant help more

Again , I was asking for a program not for checking the format of my movie .

Anyone can help (I believe this thread is already ruined, lol)

    Hmm .dat files

Now first of all an extension of a file has no bearing on its file contents. Exetions merely associates certain file types with a specific program and instructs OS to open files with that extension with that specific program.

Madboy, sorry to say most of the information you provided here are factually wrong.

Changin the extension would be useless as the content of the file will still remain same. .DAT files are usally used to store video information.

DAT is no special file format and is not certainly not scrambeled by itself. The fact is that you can write data to any file and give it any extension you choose. You can give it .doc if you wish, but it would mean that people will think its Word Document and when double clicked it will try to open with Word.

Priate the dat file you are mentioning is probably are in MPEG format, it is quite easy to convert them to DivX or pure AVI.

Though when you convert them back to DivX you would not see qulity imporvement since MPEG is actually converted from AVI so there are some qulaity loss as far as i know. The file size might drop significently. Best thing is to convert AVI files to DivX format, then you will get best results.

I used to use some other program before to encode to DivX format, but like ABX mentioned Dr DivX is by for the best. I use it always and is extrely good. I would recommend you using that too. You can download a free shareware version from DivX.com.

I am not 100% certain either if it can convert from MPEG, but i am pretty sure it will, but for converting from AVI its the best.

Download it and give it a try.

    Hope this helps.
