Okay, this is a little off subject since it could involve any programming language. However, I'm sure that some of you more experienced database programmers have run into this before. I'm trying to make the address section compliant for all or most countries. How do you usually handle foreign providences or states? Is every other country's states/providence abbreviatable to two characters like in the US and Canada? If not, how many characters would you suggest? Any details of the strategies that you have seen or implemented for addressing international address issues would be appreciated.

Most countries don't have "states", so don't force any entry there.
Lots of countries have ZIP codes/Post Codes, but this shouldnt be forced either
