Default Website won't start on Win2K Server
I have a win2k server, and for some reason I can't start the default website, or the administrative site.
Internet Services is running just fine, but when I right click on the default site, and select Start, it then seems to hang, and then a while later pops up a message saying that the service didn't respond to the start or control something in a timely fashion.
Oh and there is nothign reported in the event viewer.
Any ideas ?

This exact same thing happened to me. Go to the list where you can start/stop any services you want, and stop any from netscape that you have on there. It had something to do with that on my side.... Though it may have been something else. Its just one of the steps I took.

well, a lot of times (on winxp) IIS stoped working and it would give me errors when I wanted to start it. The only way I could fix it was to remove it compeletly and then reinstall it

I had this problem also. The cause of the problem was a Pop-up blocker I was using. It was taking control of port 80 and not allowing IIS to use it. So I had to get rid of the Pop-up blocker.

Is the server dual homed (two NICs)? I've seen problems where you need to change the IIS service's IP address to listen on from "all" to an actual IP address.

No this is a very basic setup that I have.
Single Windows 2000 server, running Exchange 2000.
One NIC, one IP...
I'm sure there must be a service that I've disabled or something by mistake.
I'll have a dig around

There's an IIS Admin service, then a Web Publishing Service for HTTP, then if installed, FTP or SMTP Services.

csf; Day limit. Dunno. Got a 356 day trial here. Im sure there are cracks out there.
Anyway, I reinstalled IIS.
NEVER DO THIS!!!!
It wrecked Exchange 2000.
Exchange wouldn't process any mail.
So any mail forwarded from our POP3 connector to Exchange just disappeared.
Lost about a hundred emails
I had to reinstall Exchange, and then Exchange SP2.
Thankfully its back up and running now
