What do you think about the Napster and mp3 copyright issues taking place? Should Napster (www.napster.com) be shut down? Or will bands have to adapt to a new era of digital music?

Shame on you Metallica and Dr. Dre . I think they will have to adapt. What is the difference between this and people recording songs off the radio onto a cassette tape or a CD. Pirating music has been around for a long time and the music industry still seems to be doing fine ($millions$ better than myself anyway).

I agree. No matter what they come out with, people are always going to find a way to pirate music. Might as well just let it be.

I used to use Napster, at least until the university blocked it two weeks ago, and if it did anything for me, it persuaded me to buy a CD or two. (luckily not metallica or dre.) If played back to back, I can really tell a difference in quality between CD and mp3 too.

Well DVDs are encrypted but that can be broken. The main reason is because there are no DVD recorders available yet that will store an entire movie lenght DVD.

    CDs

I like Napster. I heard that the sharing mp3 **** is illegal. But see, what would you say about cds? One person buys a cd for the full price. Others pay him/her a lot less to burn a cd for them. So, that's like cheating the artist out of selling so many copies of the original and making a lot of money, isn't it?

Where ever music technology goes, people will always find a way to pirate it.

    Arrow DVDs

I recently did a search for DVD warez (and many other keywords) just to see what was out there. What I found was quite astonishing. There were few hits from the search engine but they gave you about $500 worth of technology on DVDs. They provided the decrypted DVD file, the player, and a re-encrypt/write prog if you wanted to put it on a CD type format. Now, this may be hypocritical of me, but the DVD rip-offs are definitely wrong. The DVD encryption technology should but kept on their little chips in the players.

Well the encryption used on DVD players is a joke. I believe it's only 5 bit. But the main reason it was cracked was because one company forgot to properly encrypt theirs.

So companies who make DVD players get let in the secret of the encryption?

Yup, well the way I understand it each licensee gets its own key. And I believe every DVD has all the keys for the licensees in that area (not sure about that part)
