    Hi there web programmer people.
    I'm very interested to know how many of you have either migrated to Windows 2000 or are in the process of/going to do soon? I am rolling out a webserver running Win 2K Advanced Server, and so far it looks to be very good. The much improved IIS does a lot for making ASP a more popular choice - hopefully we can start to move away from the older technologies such as Perl and get down to some 'nice' coding with VBScript.

    I haven't try web services for windows 2000 before. But i heard that it comes together with IIS5. What about SMTP services?? Does that mean that we don't have to install option pack on it any more?? From the feel and looks, windows 2000 definitely is better then window NT.

    Yes! No more option pack. Win 2K comes with IIS 5, SMTP, FTP and NNTP services. And what's better, you can change from being a PDC to a BDC or a standalone server without having to reinstall Windows!

    Thumbs down Windows 2000

    Well my upgrade has been nothing short of a nightmare. I am currently running NT4 SP5 with Option Pack loaded. My site uses Site Server 3.0 for web security.

    I've had lots of problems upgrading the NT groups and ACLs that Site Server uses/manages for web security and had to back the whole Win2K upgrade out.

    My first attempt at the upgrade failed and I had to rebuild my entire server with my old software since the Win2K upgrade didn't "de-install" successfully.

    All said and done, lost over two days of effort and still haven't upgraded. Now I'll have to hire a MS enginner at about $1800/day to complete the project.

    Bottom line: if you have a simple site with HTML/ASP, basic security, upgrade should be okay. If you have anything out of the norm, PLAN AHEAD!

    Sounds like you've had a bad time. I have to agree that planning is essential to making an upgrade to Win 2K, and making sure that you understand all the parts of the new OS that you are going to be using.
    The Windows 2000 Resource Kit seems a good place to start if you want to move to Win 2K.

    I did a fresh install of W2K server. Installed no problems. Installed Active Directory and DNS server. No problems here. Installed SQL server. No problems.

    It's my SQL, IIS, COM+, DNS, Domain Controller, firewall & router. Haven't rebooted since I got done installing all my software.

    I figured somebody should share a positive experience with W2K.....
