clarifying some misinformation here: line-in is for inputs that have power on them. Pre-amped in other words. Mic input supplies its own power.
and the mic input is much higher gain. you can plug a pre-amped source into the mic-in and you "probably" won't damage anything but the soundcard expects that input to be much lower gain so you will get distortion.
