If you need mobility then you should go with laptop, if not then desktop.

Re: Pc v/s laptop
I've used the HP Mobile Workstation series of laptops for my last 2 or 3 machines - very powerful laptops.
While it's sitting in the docking station on my desk - it's connected to a 26 inch monitor above it - so I've got incredible visual working area. When I need to be onsite with one of my customers I can bring it along and have my "desktop" with me for demo's or onsite work...
Depends on your needs though - as dee-u already said...

I generally do not like laptops. Replacing parts for a laptop is one of those things that will put some gray in your hair. With a standard desktop PC, replacing parts is painless and elegant. This alone is reason enough for me to champion towers over laptops since replacing old parts like bad HDs or upgrading your video card is inevitable. When hardware goes bad in a laptop, you're pretty screwed.

I've always found that the hardware that breaks is obsolete anyway - I change machines every 3 or 4 years.
And the only thing I've ever had break hardware wise is disks - and they change in a laptop as easily as a tower - don't they??

Well you're a pretty blessed guy I've had my PC for about 7 years now and through the years, it ran through several hard disks, memory modules that went bad, several video card changes and upgrades, 2 motherboard changes, and the previous motherboard had on-board networking hardware that went bad and needed to be replaced by putting in a network card. If this were a laptop, I would have been replacing laptops and not little pieces of hardware which in the long run is far cheaper.

The PC is my tool - like a lawn guy has a lawn mower. Self-employed here - so I gotta stay top of the line. It's actually the only expense I consider important - I'm wearing t-shirts and such that I've had for 10 years!

I think you mean "desktop or laptop" because a laptop PC is still a PC. If you need mobility then you need a laptop, but I'd much rather use a desktop at my desk. If you can, get one (or more) of each. I've got a desktop on my desk, a 15" laptop in the lounge room that I can take on the road if required and a 12.5" laptop that is much lighter and doubles as a tablet. That last is a Dell XPS 12, which is much more powerful than a tablet or even an Atom-powered convertible but, while it's much lighter than bigger laptops, it's still heavier than a real tablet. If you can only plump for one machine and you need significant mobility then a 13 - 15" laptop is probably the best compromise. You can add a big monitor on your desk and still get decent power on the road.
