How do you upload a text file and a folder to a remote internet server???
Hello, I wish to have a Visual Basic Application to upload a data text file and a number of blank folders to a remote internet server, that I have my webpage on. But then I wish to have my Visual Basic Application to communicate with it, as well. I wish this to only be not bigger than one Form, in deed that would be far too much to handle. Can someone please help me with this problem of mine???
!! Thanks in advance !!

Re: How do you upload a text file and a folder to a remote internet server???
It all depends on what your server supports.
The crude LAMP-based freebie web hosting people often use supports little besides the creaky old deprecated, insecure, firewall-hostile FTP protocol for this. There is little support for FTP in Windows for good reasons, and the only standard component supporting it (partially and clunkily) is the Internet Transfer Control (INet).
However if you use hosting where FrontPage Server Extensions or WebDAV are supported it can be like miles of smooth level road. I won't bother describing the techniques required since you are unlikely to have the capability at your server.

!! Thanks for the Input !!
Problem #1: The Internet Hosting Server, is the http://www.zymic.com/, if that helps. Also then I have found a VBForums, Thread on a File Upload that uses PHP and VB6 to do the work. If I am able to upload it as an attachment to the Thread in one of the future Posts, can someone please help me to look at it. I am required to have a silent Upload Form and then not one that has the Loud Upload Form, which means that the loud upload is the one with the upload DialogBox, addded to it using something like the CommonDialogBox Control. Then if I am able to bypass that using only the Open and Close statements then I should be able to get past it, no sweat. Also then the modifications then should also then be adapted to the PHP Script, which I am also going to upload to the Thread, in a future Post. When I begin work tomorrow, seeing that yes it's Mother's Day in Perth, WA. So then I must have a break sometime of the year. Now shouldn't I???
!! Thanks in advance !!

I have then been able to make the source code using the tutorials that I have found on the Internet, using the Yahoo! Australia's Search Engine. So then I am still going to keep this Thread alive, when I will begin the testing of the source code. However the tutorial is very old, that I maybe requried to make some changes to the information inside of it. Cause it is about atleast ten years old. And then for some reason there is a PHP Server Side Console and a Client Side Visual Basic script, too. It is meant to be uploaded to the Website, that you are going to upload infomation to. That PHP type of upload Consolem, is three years old. So then I am now going to use it in the OCX that I am working on...

Re: How do you upload a text file and a folder to a remote internet server???
You can only upload files. You would have to create the folders you need on the server then upload your files to those folders. Using Inet is an easy way to do this. If you have a PHP to do this then use that.
Anything I post is an example only and is not intended to be the only solution, the total solution nor the final solution to your request nor do I claim that it is. If you find it useful then it is entirely up to you to make whatever changes necessary you feel are adequate for your purposes.

Re: How do you upload a text file and a folder to a remote internet server???
FTP would be the most common way to do this. It will allow you to create folders and upload files provided your server supports it.

That's what I meant when I was suggesting Inet which you use FTP commands with that would be the only way to use Inet

Re: How do you upload a text file and a folder to a remote internet server???
You need to decide which method you want to use. If you opt for the command line FTP then you can simply open a command prompt on your pc then type FTP then when you get the FTP prompt type ? for a list of available commands
for example mdir is used to make a directory, put is used to upload, get is used to download. If I were to go that route I would create a little batch file with the commands I want to execute and call that batch file from VB via shell
I use Dart FTP which has several nice features so if you have access to it you may want to try that if not then you could look for examples of using FTP via Inet control.

Re: How do you upload a text file and a folder to a remote internet server???
Also, CuteFTP is good. I use that for most of my site upgrading. It's not free but you can download it and use it free for quite a while until you are prompted to buy it or don't use it any more.
For absolutely no charge then I suggest Window's FTP.exe and use batch file as DM suggested. FTP commands are straight forward and with the ? you get a comprehensive help list of how to use the commands.
Lastely, I would use Inet. Although it is easy it does require you getting used to coding for it but there are many examples around here as I myself have uploaded a few examples in threads.

Re: How do you upload a text file and a folder to a remote internet server???
I have Cute FTP as well and I use that for my web sites and such. The Dart FTP is an OCX control that allows you to do quite a bit through VB code and includes a sample FTP program that has several features with source of course.
Years ago I wrote a program that would auto update a web site via FTP without the end user knowing the login info which is what I bought the Dart control for. Used it in a couple of other projects as well as the Dart HTTP control

Not an option since ftp.exe (the one supplied with Windows) does not use StdIO streams so there is nothing to redirect to pipes.
However you might find a 3rd party FTP client that can do this. I used to use a free one from Standard Networks. They still have a download page MOVEit Freely Download with working download links but the page is "rotting away" (broken images) so it might be gone soon. That one supports StdIO redirection.
If you can get away with "flying blind" you can create a session script file for Windows' ftp.exe and Shell a run of that. There's no feedback to your program however so one false step (wrong PW?) and things fall over or hang.

So sorry to bother you guys again, but then I have found some source code that works like this:
Please note that I have hard coded some of the Properties Window at Design Time, therefore I won't be required to write that information inside the Code Window. Just thinking about that infromation, because of the fact that it doesn't change and then I just inputed it into the Properties Window, instead...

This is what my Handler named: cmdUpload_Click(() looks like when inside the Project1. Also when trying to finish off the execution of the data inside this Handler, at RunTime and also CompileTime, it hangs until the ActiveX Control Object hangs and crashes the Webpage Document. That is the type of Project that I'm using for this project of mine. It's a Web Cloud Application. The app is totally online and then the Documents, etc are on our Local or Network disk, of your system/network. I won't be keeping any kind of data of the end-user's online, for any period of time. Re: How do you upload a text file and a folder to a remote internet server???
personally i would use a windows shell object, this supports copying of folder and content
there are several examples in this forum if you search on shell ftp
files transfered using this method are sent asyncronously, so your next instruction will run without waiting for the file transfer to complete, unless you loop to wait for transfer to complete
i do my best to test code works before i post it, but sometimes am unable to do so for some reason, and usually say so if this is the case.
Note code snippets posted are just that and do not include error handling that is required in real world applications, but avoid On Error Resume Next
dim all variables as required as often i have done so elsewhere in my code but only posted the relevant part
come back and mark your original post as resolved if your problem is fixed
