As your question does not involve a programming issue I have moved your thread to the more discussion oriented forum section of General Developer.

    Re: .NET Website Development

What kind of an answer are you looking for? Outside of the web, technology is changing at an impressive, and fairly steady, pace. Popular languages such as VB have lifespans that can be measured in years. By those standards, .NET is a highly successful language, as it has nominally been around for 11 years by now. However, I would say that .NET prior to 2005 is so much different from .NET from 2005 on that they are practically different languages, so perhaps you could say that .NET has been around for 8 years. That's still pretty good, and it is very likely to remain for many years to come.

However, the pace of change in web technology is utterly frantic when compared to desktop technology. Whatever you identify as the Next Big Thing for web coding is liable to be yesterdays news before you can complete any significant project in it. Smartphones are younger than .NET. Common internet usage is younger than .NET (depending on how you define "common"). So, you certainly can't say that .NET is the Next Big Thing in web coding, though it may end up having a day in the sun, so who knows. In any case, chasing the Popular Technology is pretty nearly hopeless in the web world, and guessing on the Technology of the Future depends on which particular month you are talking about (or it at least feels that quick).
