    Advertising

I'm so glad there's a new fullscreen Microsoft advert playing just before every 3rd page I visit on this site. Is there any way you can add an irritating soundtrack (preferable played about 60-70% louder than necessary)?

Also can we have more mouseover adverts please, those are my favourite. In fact why not just show 1 post per page and then we'd be able to see the optimum number of adverts per hour.

I love what you've done with the place.

At least one of the above statements is false, I'll leave you to decide which.

I suddenly feel the strange urge to buy some clouds and grow a trendy beard.

    Re: Advertising

I was about to make a post to declare my love for the new advertisements too. As I logged in, I was moved to a page which just consisted of an ad with the words at the top "click here to continue". I love that! I love the fact that now I know what server solutions I should invest in.

    Re: Advertising

hmmm... this feels like the battle of wits....

since I haven't seen the ad mentioned in the first line, and I'm not behind any strange firewalls that would block it, I can assume that that statement is the false one.

How ever in the second statement you mention that the mouseover ads are your favorite... now we all know THAT isn't true...

Your third statement stinks of sarcasm... therefore we can assume that that statement is also false.

You then further state that at least one of the above statement is false. This does not preclude the fact that ALL of the statements are false.

therefore... I submit that all of the above statements were tendered under falsehood.

If there is in fact an ad playing that's taking up the whole screen, report it to Martin... I don't think there's anything that is supposed to be hijacking the display like that... I know we've had issues with talking ads before and things auto-playing and they've complained about it to the third party that serves up the ads...

Dont' give them any ideas about the mouseover ads... there's enough already... make suggestions like that, they're likely to take it seriously... ever deal with sales before? Day one of training their sense of humor is removed.

lastly, sarcasm or not... things around could be worse... so I give the admins kudos for keeping things as tidy and ad free as they can... it's a constantly evolving process, and don't forget, at the end of the day, some one has to make money to support this place and keep the lights on.

I was going to focus on the trendy beard, myself. Mine is trending downwards, but it is just a trend, and not a very reliable one, either.

I haven't seen the ad mentioned in the initial line, and all the other stuff seems too vague to pin anything on.

Luckily adblock makes short work of this entire page and takes me straight through to the main set of mouseover adverts. And by that I mean the VBForums pages.

    Re: Advertising

The advert does not stipulate what we should do if we are not mentally and spiritually prepared for the phenomenon of "Cloud Power". Should we turn back and seek shelter under the cosy wing of Codeproject.com or should we simply submit to the whim of the Bearded One and proceed forth into the abyss?

    It's a tricky one.

That page was exactly the one I got, www.vbforums.com/welcomead except I had one about how to manage Facebook...

I assume you meant that they were the same because they were pages, right?

The thing about that is, I have whitelisted VBForums. If I un-whitelist them then I will have blocked adverts, which I don't want on this site as it is no doubt the main method of financial support?

    Re: Advertising

    It is indeed.

I have seen the "full page" advert twice so far (in well over 500 page loads), and as there is a link to Skip it I'm not bothered about it - I watched it the first time, and skipped it the second.

It is likely to use cookies, so if you have cookies disabled then there is a good chance it will show more often than it is intended to.

This ad should only show once a day at most. As stated, if you are *not* clearing cookies and you are seeing this more than once, then something is wrong on our side. Please confirm this and I'll go hammer on our ad people to get it fixed.

    Thanks,

It should be mentioned that if you log out, you have cleared cookies. So if you log out every time you leave the forum, you will see the ad again when you return.

There's only potatoes in Idaho - apparently they've evolved some kind of primitive humanoid body and social structure.

I had a bad dream last night that featured that beardy microsoft cloud man. I've made sure not to delete my firefox cookies just now so if I do have that nightmare again then this evening your system must be OK after all.

    I'm not sure, either.

Fortunately, however, there IS sushi in Idaho.

You have to love adblock. I downloaded the extension for Google Chrome and have only realized that it was actually doing something when I went onto my Desktop computer and surfed the web.

    Re: Advertising

I've seen the full page ad at least once but not more than once in a day.

I was thinking about IE3 myself when wossname mentioned it. I just looked at the wikipedia article on Internet Explorer. Sort of interesting.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer

IE has been the most widely used web browser since 1999, attaining a peak of about 95% usage share during 2002 and 2003 with IE5 and IE6.[citation needed] Since its peak of popularity, its usage share has declined in the face of renewed competition from other web browsers to 55%, and is slowly trending downward. Microsoft spent over $100 million per year on IE in the late 1990s,[1] with over 1000 people working on it by 1999.[2]

...Internet Explorer 3 was released on August 13, 1996, and went on to be much more popular than its predecessors.
Over 1000 people working on IE in the late 90's. I wonder how many people they put on the different Windows versions?

I was wondering about the release date of IE3. I was using a computer very little at that time.
