If you say so.
I have to say though the worst stand up ever is Ricky Gervais. The man simply isn't funny

Yes!
Ricky Gervais is about the most unfunny person to every grace our sweet earth, it's almost a crime to call him a comedian!
Also his laugh annoys me, it's like the cackle you might find a torture victim lets out just before going insane.

Re: Best Comedian Alive?
I don't know who he is but there's probably some people that think he's funny or else he wouldn't be known as a comedian at all. If absolutely no one thought he was funny how would he even be known as a comedian. It says something about how each of us responds to things differently. What one person finds funny someone else may think isn't funny. What one person considers interesting someone else considers boring and so on and so forth.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Bill Cosby. They all have taken lessons from him.

Re: Best Comedian Alive?
I remember growing up our family had one of Bill Cosby's records and we all enjoyed it. I remember his story about Moses.
I think Jack Black can be very funny too. He has uncanny eyebrow control. I saw him demonstrate it once. I think every comedian has times when they are on and times when they're not. Whoopi Goldberg in the movie Ghost I thought was on and she made me laugh but other times I don't find her funny at all. There are some comedians that are on a greater percentage of the time.

Hope you're wrong, because I've got tickets to see Frankie Boyle early next year. I saw Dara on his tour last year and he was fantastic, so good that we actually bought the DVD of that tour when it came out. It was worth getting - about 50% of the material was completely different to the show we'd seen.

InvisibleDuncan > Frankie is fine, if you haven't seen his stand up before. Otherwise there's a lot of stuff he's done before.

If we are talking about the best comic ever dead or Alive then there is only 1 choice - Richard Pryor, no contest !!

Saw Frankie Boyle at the weekend and thought he was excellent, although very, very near the knuckle. There were one or two jokes that I'd heard him do on MTW, but most of it was new to me.
Incidentally, he was supported by a Canadian comedian called Craig Campbell who was also extremely good. Possible even more sweary than Dara, but brilliantly funny.

Re: Best Comedian Alive?
Alive? Billy Connolly, Jimmy Carr, Dave Chappelle, Jim Gaffigan, Steven Wright...
Unfortunatelly, the best are no longer alive: George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor... If had to choose one as the best, it would easily be Carlin.
But, the worst are still alive: Dane Cook, Carlos Mencia... ***.
EDIT: And I just see that the thread is over a year old. What's with all the bumping of ancient threads recently?!

It wasn't really bumped in the normal sense, there was just a long pause. Invisible Duncan mentioned back in post #49 that he was going to see a certain comedian early this year...and he resurrected the thread to report on it.

I worked at the rehearsals, it looked like it would be a good show. He came across as a sound guy.
I like what I've seen of Tim Minchin
Edit: Oops, grave digging (was thinking it must have been a bloody long tour)

Re: Best Comedian Alive?
Eddie Izzard was great but not up to his old standard, which isn't surprising considering the 10 year break for acting. I'm looking forward to the next tour.
I've only seen a couple of minutes of Tim Minchin, but I like what I've seen so far.
