One of the articles I read on that (linked to from google news), said that this species could have lived up until so little as 500 years ago. Now I don't know how likely that is, but I think it even mentioned tales about short people. Surely they would have found more by now if they had existed more recently though.
Either way, this is just an interesting as the Cassini mission atm, I can't wait till January though, hope the landing goes well.
