Question Building an intranet for work

    Hi peeps.
Could do with some help/pointers to do the following -
I want to set up 3 iPads for 3 small business premises. What I want to do slowly move associated forms than need filling in by staff during the day from being paper based, to electronic.
Currently, staff print out and complete and sign sheets of paper.
    What I envisage is that
1.each home will have an iPad, staff pick it up, type in a passcode and open a browser.
    2. The home page will be a simple page asking the user to either, view historical documents or make a new entry. Or some other task like view memos.
    3. The user will then pick an option, say make an entry.
    4. This will then open another page where they can select what form they want to complete.
    5. The form will pop up with fields to complete., they fill in the form fields and hit a button saying “authenticate”, where the iPad will take a picture of the person completing the form(as a record of who completed the form), and file the data somewhere where it can be interrogated in the future.

I know, lots of things to do here. But any guidance to get me started would be appreciated. I know a little vb.net having automated a home brewery a couple or so years ago.

    Cheers
    Steve

What part of this project do you expect to use VB .Net for??? Doesn't really seem like the right language for the job.

I’m not sure. What’s possible? How would you recommend doing this?

I really don't feel qualified to give that type of advice. It's just that you really don't hear much about people using VB .Net for IOS apps.

But I'm sure there's people on this forum that can give you good advice.

I'm surprised that noone else has chimed in and provided you with their opinion. Google might be your next step, try something like "best ios development language" or "can visual basic create ios apps". It appears to me that if you want to use Visual Studio that C# and Xamarin are the tools to use. You might also want to ask this question in the General Developers forum on this site.

This is what I understand from the requirements and what could be done:

    • Using web browser on iPad or any other device simplifies the problem since this will be web application and no need of writing native iOS apps with Xamarin (the .NET way)
    • VB.NET can be used to create ASP.NET MVC application. Sadly .NET Core doesn't support .vbhtml to create VB web apps so we stick to .NET Framework for now
    • Knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript will be required to improve the web app UI
    • App will consist of few web pages: login, choice of form to fill, views of each form to fill
    • Rest is just adding info in the database
    • The search, analytics and whatever is required can be done in simply in Windows desktop app, maybe winforms as the simplest approach with .NET

The web app approach will allow using the app from any web browser - on Android device, laptops and desktops with any OS (Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc.) without the need of "native" applications for each of these.

Well, in web apps there are some other problems to solve - screen size, orientation and to define the user interface and the user experience to be useful for mobile touch devices.

You can try creating in VS2017 or 2019 ASP.NET Web Application (.NET Framework) using MVC template (not the blank one) and check the created project structure, the generated example files and test how it goes by changing here and there and test by running the application.

You need to first work out what it is that you're even asking about. The title says "building an intranet". That's not even programming; that's networking. An intranet is a particular type of network, i.e. a local network based on internet protocols. Is that what you're actually asking about, or do you already have an intranet and you're actually asking about how to build a web site to run on your intranet? If you don't know the answers to questions like that then you need to do more research first.
