SSMS - Allow remote connections to this server

After installing an instance of SQL Server Express I always went into SSMS and checked the box to allow remote connections to this server. The default was always UnChecked so I needed to go in and enable it.

But in the last couple of installations (since SQL Server Express 2016) I notice that it's already checked. Remote connections are already allowed.

Has the default changed and remote connections are allowed by default?

Is it possible that you already had an instance installed that already had remote connections enabled and the installer took its lead from that? That's just a guess.

No. New installation in a new installation of Windows 10 in a new VM

Are you then saying that, as far as you're concerned, the default is still 'UnChecked' (Remote connections are not allowed)?

No, I'm not specifically aware of the default having changed, but I'm not sure that it hasn't. I wonder whether it might be that the installer can detect that it's on a VM and defaults that option to checked in that case. Again, just a guess.
