How to find icon file for url desktop shortcut

I have a Desktop shortcut icon that I would like to find the icon file for so I can use the icon on a new shortcut that I created. However, when I click the Change Icon button, the location that is displayed does NOT contain the icon that is currently in use. If there is any code available that can be used to find the real file that the icon is being obtained from, ideas on how to find that would be appreciated. Thanks.

Did you check the executable the link is pointing to? The executable can contain icons to be displayed in various contexts.

In this case, it is probably the browser executable that contains the icon.

This is a internet shortcut to a web link, so there is no executable. It opens the url in the user's default web browser, which could be Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, and those .exe files do not contain the icon that is displayed for the shortcut.

Well, the web page through the link can provide the icon as well. Look in your browser history, do you see a bunch of different Icons associated with the web pages in the history (for instance a white VB in a blue rectangle for vbforums.com or a yellow tag icon for Best Buy or a multicolor G for google. An executable program can have an icon, so can a web page.

Perhaps this link can shed some light on the subject.

The icon in question is not a FavIcon, and I think it is unlikely that the desktop icon would be using a file from the web site. Those files can change at any time, and, if the web connection is lost, the desktop icon would be missing also.

I was able to find a file on the hard drive that contained what appears to be the icon that I was looking for.

    Thanks.
