If you are enable to start "Excel.application" via CreateObject then it's to my knowledge always the desktop version.
The online version is a webservice

But maybe I misunderstood your question.

    Hy Arnoitdv,
yes, you understood well, I get the object via CreateObject.
What will be happens if I open a .xlsm file by shell("test.xlsm") and get the object by set xlappl = getobject("test.xlsm").application.
At this time I don't now is it open in desktop or as webservice? I think if it open as service and I start macros by xlappl.run "xxx" there will take an error. I has to check this befor start .run, but what is the way to do this?
    Unfortunately I can't check this without a office 365.

I believe I've have a home Office 365 subscription at home, and it just installs the office applications like Word and Excel 2016.
    So nothing special there.

If a client only uses the webonly version of Excel then you are out of luck with .XLSM files.
