AOU!AOU!AOU!
Actually you are watching to many Hollywood movies.
And now education time:
Sparta had a battalion -phalanx that was consisted by "Skyrites" .They were the, let's say, elite commando of that time, and they were fighting ahead on battle time, even forward from Leonidas.
They had a white hawk in black background as a symbol and they where considered the best of the best.
On a cruising attack they where very close on killing Xerxes himself but they only manage to kill 2 of his brothers and he got away.
On the Thermopylae battle they where holding the left flank, fighting along the king Leonidas (and any king in general), while the right flank was held by the known 300.
They where Arcadian's joined the Spartan army.
So, my origin is form Arcadia and I guess my ancestors where there slaughtering Persians .
But of course I am very modest...... Ebay actions for some of my hair begins at 22:30, initial price 1000$ and you can thank me for being Christians right now :P

Such heroes in ancient Greece and now,to think of the currenty sissy political dogs that we have voted to be on the Greek parliament.
Back then they would all have been executed and then we would have a big feast and watch a comedy or a drama on one of our Greek theaters (while our current european union friends - torturers where climbing on trees eating fruits and screaming ).

The Spartans were ok but lacked a bit of imagination, I liked the guys that hid in a giant wooden horse the best, i imagine the idea came about thusly -
Drunk Greek 1 - "We must attack yonder city"
Drunk Greek 2 - "But it has high walls, it will not be easy and many will die gloriously"
Drunk Greek 1 - "Aha not if we hide inside a giant wooden horse"

The Thebans were just sitting around chortling over their name.

Re: Homemade DDOS Protection?
Drunk Greek 1 was Odysseus.
That reminds me.
We did both Odyssey and Iliad at school.
And I quote..Aheeem.. Άνδρα μοι ἔννεπε, μοῦσα, πολύτροπον, ὃς μάλα πολλὰ πλάγχθη, ἐπεὶ Τροίης ἱερὸν πτολίεθρον ἔπερσεν....
Google translate this buckos!
So,ye, when I went at school we had the original ancient text!A lot of kids died that day!I think now they teach the neo Hellenic.
Used to hate that text but now I give it tons of respect.
So let's just take the first couple of paragraphs of Odyssey (will translate to English a very small portion of the main parts).
Sing Muse*1 for the man that went to Troy*2 and knew many states.
To save himself and bring back his comrades (but) could not (save them), they were lost like windmills*3 in the sun
And tell us, daughter of Zeus*4 that every Achaeus saved, went home, except of him that longed for his wife and land,(but) fairy*5 Calypso*6 hided him.
*1 Muse, used in many variants in modern world.
*2 Troy, well, you know
*3 windmills deviation and inspiration for Don Quixote
*4 Zeus, used in literally everything. From server names to movies.
*5 Fairy. We had a discussion about fairies a while back
*6 Calypso.I guess mostly known on Pirates of the Caribbean in a very wrong and twisted way (and Ducktales ) but in other movies and references also.
This is from only 3 verses. Every verse has something used in modern world. Athena, Hermes, Poseidon, Cyclops, Olympus, Cronus, Oracle, Sirens etc.
So trying mocking this is non possible. I mean it's nice to have some fun over here but the thing is huge, more huge than everyone in here and surpass us with a grunt.
P.S.
I suggest Jacob changes all the names of the game to:
Flubbles: Flim Flam's
Draconian Nightmares: Erinnyes of Thanatos. You see the idiots that named Titan(Greek word) Thanos on avengers, tried some translation from "athanatos" than means immortal, but in Greek Thanos-Athanasios is a commonly used name. Thanos however is an sort for Athanasios(means immortal) and you could not just name a titan Thanos. You make him look like sissy. You need to name him Athanasios or "Athanatos" would be the proper name for the idiots that thought to give that name on avengers.
Paranoids: Close but change to: Paranoia (or Ozzy's Challenge)

Herpes, "the one that crawls" . Looks close to Hermes but the tonal is wrong. Can't really grasp it if you do not speak the language. Hermes has the tone on the second "e", so you go by saying HermEs (Ερμής) and Herpes has it on the first "e" (Έρπης), so you go by HErpes. Tonation is very important in Greek so it takes a whole lotta different meaning using it. (Athina with tone on "i" is the city, Athina with tone one last "A" is the goddess) So close but not too close.
An interesting fact is that the Trojan horse is not actually mentioned in Iliad nor Odyssey. It's in between the 2 periods. Also the name is "Doureios Hippos" Doureios (Δούρειος) means, made of wood, Hippos ( Ίππος ) = horse.

Yep. Can't remember a damn word of it now.
Greek are up there in difficulty
For a start your word for "Yes" sounds almost exactly like "No". Honestly, to foreign ears you lot sound like you're arguing with each other the whole time
The sum total of my Greek after two holidays:-
Kala - Good
Edaxi - OK
Neh - Yes
Malaka... best I don't translate that one but I'm assured it's friendly.

Re: Homemade DDOS Protection?
And Kalimera - Good Morning !
Ohi - No
We are arguing with each other all the time! It's in our DNA. Only time we stand together is if we have to go to war or something (hear that Turkey!?).
You can avoid Yes word by do the terminator and say "affirmative" but you must remember this bad boy: "Katafatiko" . Ah, or you could mumble "mmhhhmm, mmhhhm" like doing an OK sound . Ahh, or this:
Kala, Edaxi, re, malaka!
I've told you about malaka. Better not use this if you are not sure. Depending on the occasion you may get a smile or a punch.

Re: Homemade DDOS Protection?
I took two years of Latin in high school and I remember just enough to get a huge laugh that makes people look at me strangely when I watch that scene in The Life of Brian where he gets a Latin lesson from a Roman soldier:
At least my Latin teacher didn't carry a gladius, though it almost felt that way some days. Brutal.
Our school didn't teach classical Greek or Hebrew anymore by the time I got there. But I can't remember much from my French or German classes now either.
