Why do some HTML editors use square brackets instead of angle brackets?

Why do some HTML editors use square brackets instead of angle brackets?

For example: use [element] ... [/element] instead of <element>...</element>.

Is it just to distinguish custom tags from native HTML tags? Or in order to embed the contents of the HTML editor into the HTML of the web page?

From what I've experienced square brackets usually indicate either: templating, which may or may not have anything to do with the actual editor; or it's using MarkDown notation. Or both.
