NAT Port Triggering
I am contemplating developing a VB6 program using NAT Port Triggering. I found this feature on a NAT router (Netgear WNDR3400v3), and it permits temporarily opening up an external port to help maintain the security that a NAT router provides. But what I am having difficulty with is finding how common a feature it is?
Any feedback would be appreciated. By the way, this particular router does support UPnP, but doesn't respond to any of my requests, so that is why I am looking at this other alternative.

Re: NAT Port Triggering
It should be pretty widespread though not ubiquitous. It was a legacy approach with many limitations that predated NAT-PMP and UPnP port forwarding.
It is most useful when you have only a single client machine that uses an old protocol like FTP or IRC. With only a single client you don't need a NAT router anyway and may as well just throw it away.
