No, it isn't bad advice. If you follow that advice, the worst that will happen is that you will type a few more characters than you otherwise would. There is no performance hit to NOT using SELECT *, and TG already pointed out one of the reasons why it COULD be bad, in some cases. So, there is no real case where it is better other than being easier, plenty of cases where it makes no difference, and a few cases where it would be worse. So, the advice is sound, but it is just advice. Follow it if you want. Don't follow it if you want.
