    Update problems

Anyone else having problems with the latest MS update. Besides slowing down my Win 8.1, every time I tried to wake the machine up, it would turn it off instead. I had to uninstall it.

It must be due to the security update because of Meltdown and Spectre.

    Re: Update problems

I had to restore my wifes pc and disable auto updates. A couple of days ago it updated and then would not boot up. I restored it and the next day it did it again so I restored again and set it to only update under my direction.

She is running a Windows 7 Home system. Worked fine until the update then would not boot stopping with a prompt that windows could not start and could not be automatically repaired

This could be due to the Jan update incompatibility with some anti-virus systems. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...virus-software

See: The Complete List Of CPUs Vulnerable To Meltdown / Spectre Rev. 2.0

Some of us are lucky enough not to be using a vulnerable CPU.

    Re: Update problems

It's very likely to slow down your machine because back in 2011, most CPU makers decided to sacrifice some security in the name of a performance increase. It was a very big performance increase, so it was tempting. We knew in the late 70s that kind of security tradeoff was a bad idea, but sometimes young people have to make a few billion dollars worth of mistake to realize their elders had a good idea. The only solution, short of buying a new CPU without the flaw, is for a software patch to intentionally do things that break this CPU performance feature so it can't be exploited. That means everything gets slower until new CPUs roll out. Also, since the code affects really low-level things the odds it has bugs with more severe side effects than usual are very high.

Now, as usual, some dumb choice hardware manufacturers have made cost Microsoft a lot of R&D and put egg on their face. Meanwhile, since the real solution is "buy new hardware" the hardware manufacturers make bank. Intel's taking most of the blame but it's not specific to Intel. I'd be interested in a list of CPUs that AREN'T vulnerable, I bet it'd be shorter.

The update broke the ethernet stack on my work machine, now only wifi works. I'm sort of holding off on applying it to my home machine because all said and done I don't feel like the exploit is a big concern for my specific use case.
This answer is wrong. You should be using TableAdapter and Dictionaries instead.

    Humm, that's confusing.
Acconding to some reports, all Intel processor manufactured after 1995 are potentially affected (except Itanium).
    Info at Wikipedia.

    Well they do say:

Note : It’s arguable that all CPUs that uses speculative execution to any degree are potentially vulnerable to Meltdown or Spectre or a future exploit. We will only focus on CPUs that are confirmed to be vulnerable to Meltdown or Spectre.

    Re: Update problems

I do not have W8 or W10 at the company (good ol' win7) but we get to tons of issues with the latest updates.
Our admin has blocked many of them.
On an occasion we had PC with windows 10 started fresh, without any updates. We then updated the PC and it has lost every setting and every security policy. The problem was so big that we re-formatted and used a ghost of another PC.
