    Ad at bottom of pages

This ad appeared at the bottom of this page
    http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.p...87#post5225287
and at the bottom of the forum index page. And I don't mean at the bottom just above the AUP & Developer.com link, but at the bottom of my screen, before any scrolling.

I wished I'd gotten a capture of it on the Forum Index page to better show how it appeared.
It's not that it was a problem, I didn't know that ads like that were being displayed here.

Yes. Like I said, it wasn't really a problem, just hadn't seen it before done that way here, so I didn't know if it was a rogue ad, or something new.

I felt that the ad caused odd scrolling issues on the whole page until is was cleared.

I don't know what the coder got for that ad, he should of got life!

It's one of those "what will they do next" type of ads to get you to keep coming back.

    j/k

It should only show up once or twice in a 24 hour period.
Wi-fi went down for five minutes, so I had to talk to my family....They seem like nice people.

I've had an ad pop up in the middle of the page a couple times now. Really hate that.

Yep, more frequent popups than ever before. Oh well.

Sadly they are designed as entrapment devices. To close them without navigating to the snake oil sales site you have to carefully hit a tiny "close" target in most of them. So much for weakened consumer protections in the Age Of Scum.

Too bad Star Trek never had a realistic bunch of cretinous marketing popup ads on their displays. But that is something I can imagine happening on The Orville.

Come to think of it, Quark did rig the comms and replicators on DS9 to advertise his bar in season 7.

These ads happen on the forums every now and then. I've been told we'll have them for a bit. I requested and have been told they are set to just once a day.

If you have cookies turned off, then you'll get them more, because the cookie keeps track that you've seen it.

Re: Ad at bottom of pages

I get the pop-over ad more than once a day. It generally appears twice, then goes away for a time. It does feel like it showed three times in a row, once, but I could be mistaken about that.

Just displayed 3 times this morning for me. Maybe because I hadn't been here since Fri so it had to catch up from the weekend.

Re: Ad at bottom of pages

Yeah, I got a few more triple displays of that one. It does go away after the third, and stays gone for the rest of the day. Sometimes it goes away after only two displays....I'm starting to get anxious about that third click....well, not really.

    EDIT-2

Went back to New Posts .. now it is ok
    • the ad is for Sophos
    • the issue seems to be limited to the ad for BMC

    EDIT-3

Just encountered it again .. in New Posts.
    • Click New Posts .. get it
    • Click 1st thread .. ok
    • Click <- .. (go back to list) .. get it again .. each time

I can understand that, but you also have to remember that it is ads that pays for most of the web, including this site. I would guess that nobody wants to see ads most of the time (sometimes they are of interest, but not usually), however, nothing is as free as we would like it to be.

QuinStreet controls the number of times it is displayed. I don't know what cap they have on the ad. It is nearing the end of the year, so they have likely increased it or removed it. I always pushed for the caps to be very, very small (like 1). If set higher than one or two, it becomes very, very annoying because of the frequency that people refresh pages. Annoy members and they either leave or block - which are both bad.

I totally agree. We need their financial support.

But with BMC, usually they have an ad at the top and at the right.
Then they do the pop-up I showed in post #15.
Even that is OK, as Brad notes, if it is 1, 2, or even 3 times

    But 50+ ??
    Seems a bit overkill.

My solution .. move the browser window down about 2 inches so the ad is off the screen
But don't tell any one ..

Re: Ad at bottom of pages

I didn't much care....until I got on my Surface Pro 2. It may be better with the 3 and on up, as they had more pixels on the screen. With the 2, that popup at the bottom of the page is covering a substantial amount of the screen.

I still don't care all that much, but I'd also have to say that while I could tell you the rough color scheme of the ad, I couldn't tell you the company or product the ad was about. I kind of feel like the whole ad-revenue scheme that underlies so much of the pricing of the web is resting on pretty thin ice. In this day of mice and monitors, we are increasingly able to ignore ads.

It is so out of control lately that it feels like we are in Blade Runner Los Angeles, with advertising on every surface and even advertising blimps cruising down every thoroughfare blaring come-ons to leave for the "Off World Colonies."

Re: Ad at bottom of pages

Well, advertising on the surface IS a bit extra annoying, due to the small screen size, but I haven't been seeing all that much, lately. Not on the surface, nor on the desktop.
