Re: Running VB6 on Windows 10

    Error accessing the system registry
This is usually caused by not running VB6 as adminstrator. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\VB98 - right click on VB6.exe and in the compatability tab click on 'Run as Administrator'.
SP6 for VB6 can be found at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...s.aspx?id=5721

Re: Running VB6 on Windows 10

You have to run VB as admin

    You want SP6

If the SP will not install that generally indicates that you did not follow the correct procedure for installing VB6
Generally if the install seems to hang then it did not fully install and will need to be repeated.

    Steve

    Will give that a try.

BTW, during the install process, one step
produced a 20-digit number with a note to
write it down ..which I did.

    Does this get used somehow?

    Steve

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\VB98 - right click on VB6.exe and in the compatability tab click on 'Run as Administrator'.
In Control Panel I see the following folders:

    OS (C: )
    ... Program Files (x86)
    ... ... Microsoft Visual Studio
    ... ... ...VB98

    Under VB98, I see

    Setup (folder)
    Template (folder)
    Wizards (folder)
    ADDSCCUS.DLL
    BIBLIO
    ,,,
    SCCVBUS
    VB6 .. 6/25/1998 .. Application .. 1,836 KB
    VB6.OLB
    ,,,

If I right click on VB6

    I get the following options
    .. View >
    .. Sort By >
    .. Group By >
    .. Refresh
    .. --------------------------------------
    ..Customize this folder ..
    ..--------------------------------------
    .. Share with >
    ..--------------------------------------
    .. New >
    ..--------------------------------------
    .. Properties

    I don't see VB6.exe
    I don't see a compatability tab

Am I looking in the wrong place?

You have extensions for known file types hidden in Explorer. VB6 is the one you want. Sorry it is Properties then compatibility. But as Data pointed out, It is possible that your install is not finished correctly. This may not let you install SP6.

I've just read the Install guides in posts #32 and #33 and find that #33 is the one I used on my Win10 Home 64bit, without any problems at all.

I have never written down or needed the 20 digit number that the installer throws up.

I wish you well - keep us informed.

Re: Running VB6 on Windows 10

    Steve

    Properties>Compatabiliy>Run as administrator ...

    Bingo

And I even succeeded in beginning to fill the "gray area"
    with code modules.

    1. SP6

BTW, I did try earlier to download SP6.

The download seemed to work, but I was then prompted to
designate which folder to put it into. I believe I chose ..

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\VB98

.. but I'm not positive.. Regardless, the end result was
    that I got an error statement .. " .. cab.. "

(Don't remember .. I'll take better notes next time).
Does it matter which folder I direct it to?

    2. Run the app

Also, I haven't tried to run the VB6 app yet.

    I figured I should wait until I
    1. install SP6
    2. load MSDN Help

Like I said above if your VB6 install seems to hang then it is not completing and the SP will error out when you try to install it.

As for the folder to put SP6 in that is just going to need a temp location where it will expand the archive before it installs.

Yes, it did hang, or at least it "seemed to" hang,
    emphasis on "seemed".

    As Sammi opined:

Yes. Reboot....I'll bet VB6 is installed
My hunch is that he was correct.

And further, since Steve's post #45 to "Run as Administrator"
got me past the "loading" issue such that I can now launch
the app in Edit mode and get my various .bas modules to
appear, doesn't that suggest that the VB6 install is complete?

    Your thoughts appreciated.

Re: Running VB6 on Windows 10

When I first installed VB6 on Windows 8 it went through the initial install part, hung up at the end. I rebooted, VB was there, run as admin seemed to work.

Shortcuts were not created, some reg entries were not made and when trying to install the service pack it failed saying VB was not installed.

There are a few different ways to get it to install properly, most have been detailed here at VB Forums.

Basically if the install does not make it through to the end cleanly then it isn't right.

    Datamiser

    Thanks for your thoughts.

But I remain confused by the apparent conflicting conclusions
    between you and Sammi

Nonetheless, here is a log of my attempts to load SP6

    1. go to site Steve provided .. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...s.aspx?id=5721

    2. it reads "Service Pack 6 for Visual Basic 6.0

,,, Select Language .. defaults to English .. fine
,,, There is a Download Button
,,, There is a Systems Requirements thingy .. if I expand it I get

    Supported Operating System

Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP

•Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5 or later
This is the same version MDAC that is installed by the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system and can be found here.

•Internet Explorer 5 or later is recommended for Service Pack 6. The latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, is available here.
When I click here I get

We're sorry, the page you requested cannot be found.

The URL might be misspelled, or the page you're looking for is no longer available.
    Huh ???

    3. Nonetheless, I click on Download

    I get these Install instructions

•Before starting the download, create a download directory on your computer. If your internet connection is less than 300K, it is recommended that you run the multi-part download by following the "More Information" link at the upper right, then clicking "Download Now."

•Click "Download" to begin downloading the single download. When prompted by the download software, choose the option "Save this program to disk" and click OK. Then select the directory you created on your computer.

•Run the file from the download directory. When prompted, select the same directory you created on your computer. You will be expanding the contents of the EXE into this directory.

•Run SetupSP6.exe from the download directory. When you accept the terms of the electronic End User License Agreement (EULA) the setup software will replace the appropriate files in your Visual Basic 6.0 installation.
    4. I click on SAVE
    5. My control panel is launched and I see the file under
    .. Desktop >> This PC >> Downloads

    6. I double-click the file name
    7. It then prompts me to type the location where you wans to place
    the extracted files

    8. Using the Browser feature, I select
    ..Desktop
    .. .. This PC
    .. .. .. OS (C: )
    .. .. .. .. Program Files (x86)
    .. .. .. .. .. Microsoft Visual Studio

The path now reads as "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio

    9. I click the OK button
    10. A new dialogue box appears .. Extracting acmsetup.hlp

BUT, an error box also appears

Extracting file failed. It is most likely caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file) or corrupted Cabinet file
I click OK .. to clear the ERROR box

    11. A new dialogue box appears

Re: Running VB6 on Windows 10

I figured I better save the prior post before I lost it,
    so, continuing

    11. A new dialogue box appears
This program might not have installed correctly

    Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor

If this program didn't install properly, you can try installing the
    program using compatibility setting
    12. I click on the Install using compatibility settings option
    13. I got a security window .. I clicked YES

    14. I then get the dialogue box asking where to put the
extracted files. Using the Browser feature, I select the
    same as before

The path reads as "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio

    15. I click OK
    14. A progress bar and a bunch of files fly by
    15. New dialogue box

    Did this program work correctly?

    Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor

    The options are
-> Yes, this program worked correctly
    -> No, launch the troubleshooter
As it defaulted to Yes, I click the CLOSE button
    All seems ok ...

    16. BUT, when I open my VB app in Design mode and
click Help > About Microsoft Visual Basic , I get
    Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0
    For 32-bit Windows Development
.. whereas on my old box I get

    Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 (SP5)
    For 32-bit Windows Development
    Boo.

    So, where am I?

    1. SP6 does NOT seem to have taken
    2. The new box is 64-bit. Does that matter?

    Help !!

It may be a permission thing down the mineshaft where you were extracting to, and running from.
Create a folder like C:\_Installing and extract into there

Thanks. Will give it a try in a bit.

    Guys

I just tried to run the app, and guess what ...

    .. it works ..

    Two new quick issues ..

    1. Change text colors .. eg Comments default to green, I want red
    2. Mousewheel .. doesn't work when I'm trying to edit a .bas module

It's been so long since I last did those that I've forgotten how ..

Re: Running VB6 on Windows 10

You may want to uninstall completely & re-install.

As mentioned by several... Install with admin privileges, i.e., open Windows Explorer & right click on VB's setup.exe and run with admin privileges. Download SP6, open Windows Explorer & right click on the setup executable & run with admin privileges. When starting VB6, after you get it installed, activate with admin privileges to prevent registry problems when adding stuff from your toolbox & the references menu
