Need help on vb6.0 service pack 6 set up
Hi everyone,
I need the urgent need of the house because I can't seems to figure out what is wrong with the installation.
After several items to download VB6.0, I finally have it installed even though it didn't say completely successful but I can see it on my programs.
Now the service pack 6 setup wouldn't just install successfully, no error message or missing file, it will just say Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 6 Setup was not completed successfully. Please I need the help of the house ASAP.
I hope this is in the right section anyway.

Re: Need help on vb6.0 service pack 6 set up
If you uncheck the data access components when installing VB6 then the install will complete and you will be able to install SP6 without issue.
For other options see this thread

Re: Need help on vb6.0 service pack 6 set up
Also, if VB didn't 'install successfully' that may be part of the SP6 failure. If the thread DataMiser provided doesn't help, you may want to step back a bit and tell people exactly what steps you took to install VB6 to begin with, including whether or not you elevated the installation 'as administrator'

I am experiencing a similar inability to load VB6
you may want to step back a bit and tell people exactly what steps you took to install VB6 to begin with, including whether or not you elevated the installation 'as administrator'
Steps ..
1. Insert VB6 disk into DVD RW Drive
2. Right click setup application
3. Select Run as Administrator
4. At 1st dialogue box, click Next
5. At License Agreement, click I accept and Next
6. Enter Product ID from back of container, click Next
7. Accept default Setup option .. install VB6 Pro, click Next
8. At "Welcome to VB6 install program", click Continue
9. write down the Product ID as shown, click OK
10. At chose installation type, click Typical
11. Files are extracted .. takes about 5 seconds.
12. Get the VB 6.0 Pro Setup window, with
Setup is updating your system
but ...
a. the X button in upper right corner has red background
b. if I move cursor to top of window and click, the title
.. was: Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Setup
.. now: Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Setup (Not Responding)
I waited about a minute before doing that.
FWIW, I previously loaded MSDN Library Visual Studio 6.0
- I don't think I ran it As Administrator.
- I even did the complete setup
- It got to step 12 (above) and the same
Setup is updating your system
- After about 5 seconds, it then read .. Completed
Any suggestions?

Re: Need help on vb6.0 service pack 6 set up
Spoo at item 10 you should choose custom, then uncheck the data access components. You will see a warning that VB6 cannot run without these, but that is nonsense. Dilettante would advise otherwise (and he's right), but you've been struggling for days now and I think it's time we got you going. For 99.99999% of anything you might want to do, this will be fine.
So uninstall VB6 - reboot - then do what you have done again and I think you will find that the install completes. Then you can install SP6 and away you go.
Edit: Don't install MSDN until VB6 is installed. At the end of as standard VB6 install, the installer will ask if you want to install MSDN and tell you when to change disks.

Steve
Thanks for reply
I might not have done this in correct order,
ie, I did not uninstall VB6 1st.
Instead, I ran (as administrator) setup from the E:\ disk
When I got to step 10, I did as you suggested and got
the warning you mentioned.
But, good news (?), when I got the
Setup is updating your system
message, after about 5 seconds I got
... you need to restart your computer ..
Leaving the VB6 disk in the DVD RW E:\ drive, restart
executed fine.
Does this mean VB6 installed properly?
How can I confirm this?

BTW, when I look in the folder
Program Files (x86)
.. Microsoft Visual Studio
.. .. VB98
I see
VB6 .. 6/25/1998 1:00 AM .. Application .. 1,836 KB
Does that signify that VB6 successfully installed?

Re: Need help on vb6.0 service pack 6 set up
No, what signifies success is the reboot! Now you should have been presented with a screen to install MSDN. If you weren't (due to it already being installed) or you declined it, then you might not be able to access context sensitive help by pushing F1. So go ahead and install SP6. Firstly it will want to expand all its files somewhere, choose anywhere that is convenient to you as you will delete them after. Then right click 'SetupSP6.exe' and run as administrator. After this is done you can delete all the temporary install files. When you run VB6 next you should see in Help/About 'Microsoft Visual Basic 6 (SP6)'. That's it you're done!! Happy coding.

Re: Need help on vb6.0 service pack 6 set up
Steve
I've done this several times, so I already have setupsp6.exe in
Program Files (x86)
.. Microsoft Visual Studio
.. .. VB98
.. .. .. setupsp6.exe
1. right click and get Run as Administrator
2. click Run as Administrator
3. I get
.. a. "Welcome to Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 6 installation program"
.. b. and I click Continue
3. I get License Agreement
.. a. It lists these 4 apps
.. .. Visual Studio
.. .. Visual C++
.. .. Visual Basic
.. .. Visual SourceSafe
.. b. I click I agree
4. I get the infamous
Setup is updating your system message
5. after about 5 seconds I got
Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 6 -- Restart Windows
You need to restart your computer to complete the installation
Before you restart, close any open apps ...
.. Restart Windows
.. Exit Setup
6. I need to close this VBForums reply before I restart, so
I'll give update on the other side of Restart

Re: Need help on vb6.0 service pack 6 set up
Steve
I did the Restart, ... BUT
when I click Help > About Microsoft Visual Basic..
the product line reads
Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0
ie, .. not
Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 (SP6)
I get the same result if I do either of
1. launch existing VB6 app I copied from my XP box
2. launch VB6.EXE from ..
C:
.. Program Files (x86)
.. .. Microsoft Visual Studio
.. .. .. VB98
.. where "launch" means double click VB6.EXE
1. defaults to "New" tab, "Standard EXE"
2. I click Open
3. Project 1 and Form 1 appear
4. product line does not include (SP6)
Any new thoughts?

Re: Need help on vb6.0 service pack 6 set up
Well I have never seen so much trouble in getting VB6 to work. I really feel for you Spoo.
I think, if it were me, I would want a clean machine and to start again carefully following the instructions that were given to you at https://www.raymond.cc/blog/install-...hine-for-java/. I promise you that this method is both fairly simple and reliable. I don't suppose you are in the UK are you?

Thanks for the sympathy, blog address, and image.
I'm going to give it a rest for a few days. Even if SP6
isn't loaded. my app runs fine (and yes, got Help from
MSDN working too).
BTW, not from UK (although I did live in Newcastle for
a year when I was 11 .. my dad had a research sabbatical
for a year at Kings College).
I'm from the Washington DC area, good ol' US of A.

I wasn't being nosy Spoo, just that if you were in the UK, I would have gotten to you somehow and we'd have put this puppy to bed.
I hope it all works out for you.
