Windows XP Home Edition "no device detected" message

Well it finally had to happen. Our desktop running XP Home finally crashed, thankfully the wife and I use our laptops more than the old desktop. No matter what we try we get the no device detected message. What we are hoping is that there is a way to correct this so we can at least get the majority of the Pictures downloaded off this computer. Any ideas?

Either the drive is bad or the port is bad. Have you tried switching to another port?

What kind of hard drive is it? SATA or IDE?

Either way... Try unplugging the hard drive data connection and connecting it with another connector of the same type. See what happens.

Probably IDE drive, could be the controller in the motherboard has gone bad, I've seen that with a couple XP era comps in the last year or so now. I'd try unplugging the wide cable (the short 4-pin cable is the power) and try plugging in a different wide cable and see if it detects the drive.

I have found that I can also get a USB hard-disk drive enclosure and try it as an external hard drive. We really don't need the desktop anymore, just some of the info on it.

You are talking about the wide ribbon cable that the hard drive is currently plugged into right?
    Thanks

Yep, that wide ribbon cable is called an IDE cable, one of the nice things about it is they put two connectors on each cable, but to test the main board you'll actually need to plug the hard drive into an IDE cable that's plugged into a different slot altogether.
