Decisions: To EAT THE PEEL or NOT?
When I was just a young lad, there was a girl in my class that would peel an orange and eat the peel, and then proceed to throw away the inside of the orange. A group of boys would pounce and grab the inside of the orange before it could land in the bin.
For years I wondered about this crazy eating habit until I got told that most of the vitamin C is actually in the peel and not in the inside of the orange.
I now thinly slice my oranges and eat the peel as well as the inside of the orange. The bitterness of the peel seems to balance out the citrus taste of the inside.
How funny is it that the girl was right all along, and how eating habits change over time.
I got told that you can eat whole potatoes with the peel, but then others say that it is dangerous to eat potato peel. Do I risk it or do I peel off the potato skin? Any advice on this?

Orange peels - I'd go with organic to avoid the chemicals.
Potato - I've always eaten them with the peel.
Wi-fi went down for five minutes, so I had to talk to my family....They seem like nice people.

Hell no I wouldn't eat the peel of an orange. That's the devil's work.
Potato peels, on the other hand, make chips better.

I read that orange peels often contain large amounts of pesticide chemicals, and when they don't they can contain parasite eggs.
So it sounds like a foolish proposition either way.

Re: Decisions: To EAT THE PEEL or NOT?
I've never heard anybody suggest that a potato skin is in any way harmful. I've always eaten the whole potato (and the state of Idaho did NOT pay me to say that). As for oranges, I make a cranberry-orange relish that uses the entire orange, peel and all. If you think the orange peel is bitter, try eating a raw cranberry. There's LOTS of sugar in that relish, but it's the whole orange.
However, I agree with the comments on pesticides. Oranges are probably washed, but I have no idea how much is on them. As for parasite eggs....big deal. We don't like to think about it, but we consume a LOT of insects. If you've ever had creamed corn...well, that's the corn that couldn't be used as kernel corn. Guess why.

When I was young the adults said not to peel, until they offered me a coconut.

You would have to be a Nut to peel a coconut!
Just joking guys.
MY ORANGES:
My oranges, on the other hand are organically grown in my back yard so pesticide is not a problem as I simply don't use any. I don't find any bugs that do any damage to the fruit.
I might try eating potatoes with the peel, seeings that others are doing it. There is an old wives tale that the peels stick to your throat, making it easy to suffocate or choke. Must just be one of untruths that get told over the years. A bit like making a garlic necklace to keep the evils spirits away.
Do potatoes have any extra vitamins or minerals in them, or is it just fibre?

My grandmother used to peel the orange and put the peel in a jar, and then later use the peel for making jam. I can't exactly remember the process, because when my father explained it to me, I was too young to understand the whole concept.

Thinking about it, while I may not eat an orange peel when eating the orange, I'm certainly happy to use the grated zest in al sorts of recipes so I guess it's contextual.

Re: Decisions: To EAT THE PEEL or NOT?
I agree. The peel isn't inedible, it just has a different flavor and different properties. I don't have any interest in it because the straight taste of a peel lacks appeal. But if the peel appeals to you, and doesn't result in peals of laughter, then the appealing peel is perfectly fine to consume. However, even if you decide that you don't want to chew, you shouldn't eschew, because you can still pickle the peel or grind the rind and makes something of it.

I like to eat red potatoes(the ones in crawfish boils) with the skin on but I like to brown potatoes(the ones in mashed potatoes) without the skin.
I've never eaten a orange peel before, never even thought about it until now.

When it comes to fruit or vegetable skins the rule is wash then wash again.
Especially spuds. The soil that clings to the outside can contain just about anything.
I like the skin on a baked potato if it is done to correctly. Otherwise I discard it.

When it comes to a baked potato, I'm lucky if I stop at the aluminum foil...or the plate.

I sucked down a tub of Crisco, and a couple weeks later I chugged a bottle of Mazola. I do prefer things with some caloric content.

Speaking of potatoes. On St Patricks day I had this amazing corned beef and cabbage.
I do not know how they prepared them but the potatoes were like a light chocolate brown all the way through and bursting with flavor. The restaurant was this local little brew pub. They are only open Thursday though Saturday after 4pm. Their building is a shack tacked onto the front of the CCB brewery. Tiny, rustic and fun. So small you rub elbows with the other diners.

Potatoes are a good source of potassium, if you eat the skin, and don't boil them. So eating the skin of a baked potato can give you nearly twice the potassium of a banana, which are more well known for providing potassium.
I currently need more potassium in my diet. If I don't keep my potassium up, I can feel my heart pause a beat, then beat rapidly three or four times, as if to catch up. If I stay on top of it, eating a couple of bananas each day and choosing a bake potato over another form of potato when given the choice, I don't notice any skipping beats at all, but slack off for a week or so, it comes back, so I'm pretty confident it is the potassium that is making the difference.

Generally - peels & skins can be eaten... rinds generally aren't supposed to be ... that's not to say they can't be, just that normally they aren't.

I heard that you want to keep the rinds to put in soups that don't use a roux.

Makes sense. I know that the best way to make stock/broth is to use the shells/bones/carcass.

I thought the racoon policy on rinds, peels, skins etc. was pretty universal : choff the lot.
