Yes you are correct but there is a way around this. The way is to use a web server. Get yourself a free webhost and learn some PHP so you can use it as a middle man with your vb.net application.
Remote SQL Database <---> PHP <---> VB.NET Application
Since your new to vb.net I'm going to assume your new to php and phpmyadmin so yeah. It's not too difficult if you know what you're doing, but you could pay me and I would get this done for you in minutes or hours depending on your needs. Or you could try and figure out tutorials on the web.

OP Pays me. I complete the project for him using the method I described. I then send him the project files and everything related to the project. I've done this many times before. Nothing new.

No chargebacks, and once you have paid no refunds. Simples. I have a "porfolio" of my previous freelance work.

can you give some more details on this ? What will be my system requirement / hardware / software / downloads, etc in order to use whatever stuff you provide ?

This is nonsense, most Win7 or above (actually probably XP) will have SQL compact already on it. If not just have your install/setup program install it. You don't need a Web Server or php. The Publish function of VS or other installation programs are more than capable of doing this.

True. But I think we misunderstood. I don't tend to write things how I picture them in my mind. What I really meant in my mind is if OP wanted a way to have a remote SQL he could be the admin of where all the users whatever are saved. E.g. each user has a login detail, they login and can then save info, or delete. If that was the case he'd need a remote sql server and should php and phpmyadmin. And this is what I assumed he meant.
But if what you said was what he wanted, then they could do yours. But remember not ever end user knows how to work the SQL Compact or whatever. They want a plug n play type of thing, well, in this case a register and go. Assuming that OP wants to distribute his software to many people.

stop this right now. This is not acceptable on this forum. judging by previous posts you are a beginner your self.

Okay, so how would you define a beginner? Because that's a very subjective word to use. Anyway, I've been coding for about 1.5 years now so bare that in mind. You can say I'm a beginner, but I'm able to create most things I can think of that's feasible. I would not class myself as a beginner according to my definition of who or what makes someone a beginner.

Re: VB.NET program to save user inputs and to retrieve it later
Is this so that the user inputs are accessible on any machine, or just the machine they are using?

Give more detail about your project, it's a bit too vague to be honest.

Re: VB.NET program to save user inputs and to retrieve it later
If it's just a couple of values then you could save the info in the project setting. Go to My Project->Settings. Then create the settings you need. If your going to have hundres/thousands of values then you probably should us a database.
So without more information it's hard to give you the best answer.

My.Settings is a horrible idea. If you were to move the .exe file to a different folder it would forget the settings. Happened to me before.

How could my.settings be a horrible idea? No programmer moves his exe. EXE live in program directory. I guess we better call Microsoft and inform them they are being misguided.

What if I were to distribute the .exe for other people to use? Non-programmers to be exact. And "No programmer moves his exe. EXE live in program directory". Can you explain why I must keep my .exe in a Program directory after I've finished with the coding of the project. Cause if I understood correct, then what you are saying is really absurd.

My program is to store some information. What I am going to store is items and it's characteristics. It' would not be thousands anyway, but it could be almost hundreds or even lesser. I have a userform and textboxes for the user to enter item and it's characteristics and a button to store these data somewhere. How and where can I store these data.
Let me take this opportunity to personally appreciate and thank everyone on this forum for their helping hand.
If I forget to thank you in every thread I make, please remember that I am a human being and I do sometime forget things.
My questions may sometimes sound silly or stupid, because you are an expert but I am an amateur and in need of your help. So please bear with me.

Re: VB.NET program to save user inputs and to retrieve it later
Wow what a thread, first things first !
Toph - i am not having a go but please realise that people come on to this forum to get free advice on how to do things NOT to hire rent a coders. There is a specific forum if you want to advertise your services.
Also 1.5 years is really still beginner status. Again i am not trying to be disrespectful and that does not mean you cannot be good, but you will lack experience.
--- Next ---
My Settings is supposed to be used to retrieve setting information about the application NOT user data, and for many reason which i wont go though here it really shouldn't be used for user data.
--- Finally ---
SQL Server
Remote SQL Database <---> PHP <---> VB.NET Application
This model is only required IF the SQL server is hosted on a web server somewhere remotely which judging from the OP's posts is unlikely.
Also Toph is looking at using PHP to create a web service of some sort. You can also create web services in VB.Net, however i suggest you ignore this for now as you are unlikely to need it.
If we are using SQL server then what if the client computer doesn't have it.
The client computer does not need SQL SERVER on it, in fact that is the whole point.
SQL Server should be on a SERVER hence the name. The server has the database, you app connects to your database on the server, and either reads or writes data to/from it. That is how Client / Server apps work, and how you can have multiple clients all using the same Server & Database.
I also have SQL Server 2014 Management Studio installed on my laptop
Developers Often will have a local version of SQL SERVER to develop against, which is fine, in fact the concept is the same, you will ONLY need to change your connection string, all the other code will be the same regardless of whether SQL server is installed locally or on a Server.
All you need in your VB.Net project to talk to a SQL Server IS;
- First Add a reference to System.Data. This will make available ADO.Net which is the part .the .NET framework which talks to databases.
Next you will need to Import - System.Data.SqlClient to the class or form you are using to write your code in.
Then you need to read a tutorial something like this one
